What surface do you have your tank on? I am asking this because I'm trying to figure out for myself where i should put my new tank. I am thinking about getting a tank stand or should i use a stable table/desk it would be cheaper, but the stand would take up less room and you could store fish products easier. I am also curious to see where other people set their tanks on

Personally, I think any tank over 20lbs should be on a tank stand, wheter purchased or a sturdily made DIY stand. Most furniture isn't built to withstand the weight of a full tank.

So, I have 1 10gal sitting on my kitchen counter, and the 29 & 75 have store bought stands.

I have all mine on beach wooden stands that have storage space beneath, except the one 4ft in the garage (its on a wooden stand but has polystyrene under the tank)

Mine is sat on an old side board which i re-enforced on the inside before i placed the tank on it

I sit all mine on tank stands, with a layer of polestirine between the tank base and the stand. This smooths out the surface, and reduces the risk of cracking the base pane :good:

All the best

I happily got one of those stands with the shelves and cabinet for my son's tank we are setting up. Remembering my tanks as a kid, which had equipment and supplies everywhere, I knew I'd want places to hide things. There is a shelf where we will put the filter and the tubes will run through a rear opening up to the back of the tank. Also, having a stand made for the tank takes away the worry about support - tanks are really heavy and need to be safely supported and level.

Good luck and welcome from another newcomer,

Hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

My 29 and 75 gallon tanks are on stands. The 5 gallon is on a table. I agree that larger tanks, that weigh say 100 lb or more (about 10 gallon), should be on a stand. It may look fine in the beginning but the constant stress of weight on a table not constrcted to handle it wil eventualy cause problems.

I have my ten gallon on a little table. It supported a big TV for a number of years untill we bought a new armwa.

I voted Tank Stand, but currently use 1 tank stand and 1 home made cabinet. I think if a specially designed cabinet is available for your tank it makes sense to use it.

My big tank is on a the manufactures stand and my smaller one is on a small mahogany cabinet my Great-granddad made. It not much to look at but is very sturdy. When i moved in to my flat and had to carry it up the stairs it weighed more than the stand for the big tank.

Between the two i prefer stand as it has cupboard doors so i can hide all my fish rubbish like food and test kits!

All but 3 of the tanks in my profile are on home made racks. Of the ones not on racks, one, a 65 gallon, is on a home made stand, one, a 72 gallon, is on a factory stand, and a 10 gallon newt tank with a few inches of water is on an old sturdy cabinet.

The only reason for the one factory stand is that the whole setup was free, I don't like the way factory made stands are built, but I do tend to overbuild things.

i have my tank on a desk however its a fairly well made desk and its only about a 7gallon tank, which probably weighs less than my ancient 17" monitor i had on there :p

I have them on metal tank stands. It's worrying however because the stands have absolutely no support in the middle...

I have 4 tanks. 20 gallon is on my computer desk over the sturdiest part where the file cabinet is. I have a 10 gallon on my "bar" between my kitchen and my family room, again, right over a support piece. I have a 5.5 gallon in my bedroom on a bookcase. That is the only tank that is on something that I question its strength, but it is such a small tank that I don't really worry. And I have a 100 gallon tank on a beautiful Oak cabinet with oak canopy.

Since every tank is on a different surface I voted "other."

:) :) :)

The 4ft is on my desk, which has been modified slightly by screwing things on more securely and adding some more wood to spread the weight out a bit. I've looked at stands specifically for tanks before, TBH the build quality is exactly the same, as it the way the whole thing is supported.

The 2ft is on a big wooden chest style thing, very thick wood and very strong. The 2g is on the desk under my bed.
