I thought this might make and interesting poll. So, what substrate do you have? I've got smooth pea gravel in my main community, but if I didn't have a refugium, I would change to sand like a shot.
Sand. I had gravel but love the look of sand AND knew the cories would like it, so I made the switch. It was a "fun" afternoon getting all the gravel out and the sand in but I'm so glad I did it.
Sometimes I feel guilty for not having sand but they seem to do ok...the chuck litlte bits of gravel round like there's no tomorrow and sometimes half-bury themselves in it. I bought extra-fine gravel then sorted it to get rid of any slightly larger bits. I'd like to switch to sand but I'm not allowed.
I have small well-rounded gravel. I wish I would have done sand, but I set the tank up prior to joining here, and seeing all the gorgeous sand tanks. Once I get my 55 gallon set up it will be done in sand, and I've been thinking of moving all of my Corys in there...that would make for a fun little school.
Ive got smooth round gravel at the moment and the corries love it- i had sand which they also liked but decided to try gravel. I had lots of fun changing the substrate.....
Sand, which I've noticed has done wonders for their barbels. Most of those I see in gravel tend to have shorter, stubble like whiskers where mine are almost whiskers like a catfish, nice and long and thin at the tips like they should be.
I use what is called #3 gravel which is fine and smooth. It's natural rock in soft shades of tan. The corys love it. Another good thing about it is the price. I just bought another 50 lb. bag of it for $11.99 at the lfs.
Well can i fill in all three ticks? I've had sand (with corys n synos), fine gravel (corries, synos, n banjos) and now coral and shells (synos)
Oh.......and an hounourable mention award go to my head hurts for purchasing the sand and taking nearly a week to was and replace it HURRAH!! (before anyone mentions yep we're related )
i got fine gravel. i was thinking of changing to sand but i am really not bothered! and i have just got my tank looking how i wanted it and i dont want to mess it up
