MUST BE COMPATABLE WITH:
GUPPIES
PLATYS
CORYS
SERPAE TETRAS
NEON TETRAS
BETTAS
A love of eating algae would be great

The shrimp(s) will be going into a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium with above fish

Please tell me how many I should get

Get some RCS i know they might not be the coolest of shrimp but i personally love them!

Amano shrimp are hardy (for shrimp), and are excellent cleaners.

RCS would most likely get eaten by the other inhabitants of the tank unfortunately

+1 for Red Cherry Shrimp.  As Wildbetta suggests, you will have to buy adults.  As long as it is heavily/densely planted, they should be okay.  Except that betta.  He might find them.

Same thought i just had Elro after looking at that i don't think anyone else would eat the shrimp besides the betta who might catch some of them if they are not careful.

Ya there are no plants and almost no decorations/hideouts cause it needs cleaned...
So I'll wait untill we clean it before I get any

The 2 I would go with are the RCS variations and the Amano, like many others have said.  The Amano shrimp will get larger, are pretty much clear like ghost shrimp with a little bit of coloration.  The RCS come in a bunch of different colors and variations.  Both will eat algae, I have heard the Amano are like little machines though and eat much more of it.

Oh also, Amano wont reproduce in the freshwater, so no worry of babies.  Although baby shrimp fry make delicious snacks for your fishies!

I vote Amano since the RCS's will get eatten by the betta.

From my experience, I wouldn't put red cherry shrimp in your tank. I put four in my tank with platies and guppies and they all disapeared within a week, eaten by the fish. So I would recommend the amano. They are also much more effective cleaners (from what I've heard)

I have 5 Amano shrimp and they are like little robots. They clean my tank spotless! Also I had one rcs he was the only one in my Lfs and I took him home feeling bad that he was alone there.... Well it was a mistake cause he got eaten in 15 minutes. I have guppies in my tank

I've only had my amano shrimp a short while but I have a nice clean corner of the tank already.  I don't actually see them that much as they blend in like troopers... but I can see their work. I've spotted one farther over in my tank so hoping to see their handy work spreading out from the corner soon.

Amano all the way with your selection of current fish. I'd almost guarantee you'll lose some RCS if you got them.

Amanos are tough, hardy, prolific algae eaters and very interesting to watch. They're also very fast and all but the weakest will put up a good fight against any would-be attacker.
