Hi guys,

I picked up some more Amano shrimp from pets at home a good few weeks ago. Two of the guys however arn't Amano shrimp, but looked interesting anyway so i decided kept them.

I looked today and one of them looked like they were carrying eggs underneath them so i'm now interested to find out what kind of shrimp they are and if the young ones will survive or not (like Amano shrimp). I know there is no idea of scale on the phone but i would say they are slightly smaller than an Amano shrimp, but a lot bigger than say a cherry shrimp.

Photo below

Kind regards

I can't tell what it is, and can't answer my next question from the photo.

Does it have largish pincers at the front? If so, be wary....it might not be community tank friendly.

Looks like a Macrobrachium sp. if so the larva are not likely to survive in an aquaruim without serious intervention and mucking around with salinity levels and free floating algea levels. If it is a Macrobrachium species then it will most likely get larger and can become a threat to other fish in the tank. I have watched Macrobrachium hunt and wait in ambush to snatch fish, as well as take nips out of fish tails especially fish with long tails/ fins.

No it doesn't look to have large pincers, just some long feelers out of the front of it and a lot of legs/arms. I'll try and get some better photo's of it. I've never seen it try and attack a fish, in fact i've have fish swim directly over it and it walk over fish and they both just seem to ignore each other.

Cheers

Andy
