what should the P.H be for freshly mixed salt water i tested it today cos i did not know what it was and the result was 7.4 which i think is very low and i though it would be higher than that, the salinity was 1.022 any ideas -_-

Get a calcium block, it will bring up the Ph.
Hi ramjet
what are these calcium blocks you talk about, also its not my tank thats the problem its when i mix a fresh batch of salt water

I would not be overly concerned. if the sand and rock in the tank are buffering the mix when added then it seems stable enough. if you start to fiddle and try to increase the PH in the mix you might upset the balance in the tank.

thanks nav if i did not get the advice i needed i probly would of gone out and got some buffer to increase PH levels :)

Oh, not the PH of the tank. No worries. If it becomes a problem in the tank you can get a calcium block and drop it in. It will mantain the proper PH for you. Its just a white block you drop in the tank, when its gone you replace it.

Just out of interest what is a 'calcium block' made of?

Calcium, some have trace elements added (which is nice). My corals do better when I have one in the tank, great growth and open fully. Where they get the calcium to make the block I have no idea, if thats what you are asking.

Sorry- I was wondering what form the calcium was in, eg. calcium carbonate?
