For the last couple of days one of my female rainbows sometimes has a long clear pooh hanging out of it's bum, is this worms?

If so, should I leave it and will it go away or should I treat the whole tank and what should I use to treat it?

My other option is that I have an old 19 uk litres perspex tank hanging around which has had 5 coldwater fish die in it, should I clean this out and use it as a hospital tank and just treat the rainbow, in which case, what should I clean it and the filter with and how long would I need to put the filter in my good tank before it is seeded? Will this all take too long?

Also, I have no heater for this tank, but as it is so small and perspex it runs at about 74F anyway, which is why I think most of the coldwater fish died.

pH = 7.5
NH = 0
NO2 = 0
NO3 = 8

120 uk litres

Being bloated can be a sign of internal parasites is the anus also red and inflamed, i would check the other fish for signs of long stringy white clear poo.

That's the problem with internal parasites they soon infect the whole tank, can even catch them through sucking poo up and spitting it out, some say that the hole in the head med can help with internal parasites, so if you can't gt the pig worming tablet give that s shot.

I would also try some shelled peas just to see if it makes any difference.

So, if I separate the rainbow and the tetra to treat and maybe the other rainbow, what do I do with the above question (in the quote)? I can fill it with the water from the good tank, that should help shouldn't it? But how long to put the filter in the good tank before it has some good bacteria.

If other fish are infected you will probably being better of treating the whole tank, try the peas just to make sure it isn't constipation, what do you feed the fish, cook peas for a few minues in boiling water, let cool, pop out of shell, and mush up between fingers, then feed fish, do you have any frozen daphnia.

Is it ok to treat the tank with a plec in it, I've heard they aren't good with treatment?

Only flakes as the rainbows aren't much bigger than the tetras at the moment.

No frozen daphnia, but can get some tomorrow if it helps.

I would try the peas and daphnia first just to make sure, maybe pick the hole in the head treatment up just in case,read that link it should tell you which fish don't tolerate it, good luck.

Ok, thanks for all your help Wilder, fingers crossed.

I think I'll sort that other tank out, so that I don't have a panic on, if anything else happens.

Good luck, lets hope it just constipation.

Thats pretty disturbing...I never heard about white poop...especially clear white poop...I guess its parasites...WILDER is the expert...hes helped me in most of my problems.:D

The knowledgeable man in the lfs told me he has had some success with a medication called TetraGeneralTonic (contains methylene blue). I tried it, the worst affected fish died from secondary infections, but the rest appear to be have shifted it and the fry in the tank don't seem to have been infected- of course, I can't tell whether that was due to the medicine or not. You treat the tank AND soak their food in it.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. I must admit, I don't like using medicines, as I've lost most of my fish in the past after using medication.

I put the pea in and the only one who ate some was the rainbow who has the problem, which was good, she almost immediately did a normal pooh, but this morning she has the white pooh again.

Also, everytime the other female rainbow sees her, she chases her and nips at her.
