I'm in the process of setting up my first marine tank and have tonight removed the internal filter from my tank. I'm collecting live rock from somebody locally this Tuesday and am just wondering if I'm still able to use the pump that came with the tank, or do I need to get a different one? (My tank is just going to be FOWLR)

I would have probably kept the internal and stuffed it with live rock rubble and some sort of phosphate remover (just so I have to spend less time cleaning algae), connected it to the inlet of an external filter (also full of live rock rubble).

Since your going FOWLR, you could just leave the normal media in, but I find live rock rubble more effective, and even if iy's not needed, it's nice to have lower nitrate levels.

Then I would add one Koralia 1/2 (depending on how much rock you are going to have, your intended stocking and your budget) on either side of the tank.

There are other makes of circulation pumps you could go for too, for example Tunze are excellent though a little more expensive (get what you pay for in quality).

Could easily do without the external, I just like my "cryptic fuges" as such a set up would be called.

If you dont want to put the Juwel filter back in, keep the phosphate remover in the external.

Or even just get a versitile internal that can hold such media.

The pump that came with the tank can still be used, in addition to the other things though, it's not as efficient as proper circulation pumps.
