Saw some little baby plecs at about 1" long. They were jet black with pale blue spots?

Can anyone tell me which plecs they might be?

Blue phantom plecs? L128 (I think)

Looks like it may be!

Are these rare plecs? I've never heard of them before

Very unlikely to be blue phantoms, these fish are 99% wild imports, there are very few reports of these been bred in captivity and at 1 inch i doubt very much they will be wild so that leaves it more likely a different species.

Also... blue phantoms are not jet black, can be very dark greeny blue but ive never seen any which are jet black, not even at juvenile stage.

No there far from rare, sometimes expensive but not rare in the slightest.

Tbh at 1 inch and the colour with them markings they could be a few different species, L183 bristlenose seems to spring to mind but without a pic it's extremely hard near impossible to give any sort of positive ID with a 1 inch plec.

Really? I see fish labeled as Blue Phantoms all the time around my fish shops, sizes vary from 4 inch adults to small ones as well. If they are not true blue phantoms any idea what they are? Is it like the green phantoms where there are 3 or 4 species under the same common name.

That's what i mean about them not been rare, they are seen in virtually every lfs round here (just usually expensive) but they will be wild caught, the breeding isn't easy for this plec and very few have actually reported successful spawning (as far as im aware there isn't any successful spawnings documented in the UK at all). The smallest ive seen them in shops is around 2-2.5 inch again they will be wild caught. At one inch they wont be wild caught or i would be very surprised if they are. 4 inch isn't adult, far from it, 4 inch is still only a baby considering the size they can get to.

There is only 2 species of green phantoms (3 if you count the high-fin version), with blues as far as im aware there is 1 L number and one species only.

I couldn't comment personally on what they are, they may well be 128's but i still say at 1 inch they wont be. As to them not been true blue phantoms, they either are or they arnt, there is no middle ground for this species.

They do sound interesting plecs whatever they are but i know peppermints (L31) would match the description, which are usually jet black with a blue hue and blueish spots. Very nice plecs aswell but as mentioned earlier they could be a few species at 1 inch so really a pic would needed to been seen to positively ID them. sorry! :good:

Just to clarify there are 2 described species and 1 L-number which are called the 'phantom plecs'. The 2 green species are Hemiancistrus subvridis and Baryancistrus demantiodes (Hi-Fin) both also known as L200, the blue variant is considered Hemiancitrus (sp. L128) and is possibly a Northern river variant.
