Missed this one somehow. Shrimp dont really care about plants much they appreciate any greens :) they particularly like mosses as they attract and accumulate micro-organisms which the shrimp then eat.

In terms of potted plants I generally take them out of their little pots rinse the roots and plant them normally just under the sand so far all have been happy. You need to do lots of research on plant species before buying one as they can range from very very easy to grow to extremely difficult.

The type of plants you should get depends more on your set-up than anything else. Some plants are quite demanding in terms of watts per gallon and nutrients. Some good beginner plants are: elodea (also called anacharis)--this is sold in a bunch, you just stick the ends into your substrate, java moss--attach this to a rock or bogwood or just throw it in the tank, and java fern--grows best attached to rock or bogwood. My cherry shrimp really like the elodea and java moss--lots of good hiding places for raising shrimplets. Get a good liquid fertilizer if you haven't already.
