What Percentage Of Fry Loss Do You Usually Suffer

Well, I have not had the best of luck due to several mistakes I've made and I have had quite large losses. i don't expect to have many this time though. :D

I lost over 50%... to a dumb pygmy cory :look:

If you're talking about from the free swimming period on, I've heard that around 80% is a GOOD survival rate. From week 1 and on, it's common to find a few dead fry a week, but more than 10 dead fry a day shows signs of a major water problem. After they hit 1 month old, you shouldn't have any deaths.

I lost about 10% of the fry from my first spawn during the first couple of weeks, then VERY few after like... like two or three more, then none after the 4th week.

I have a bunch of guppies in with a few fish that i would expect to eat fry. But once i confirm numbers of a batch, (had about 4 batches so far) i don't lose a single one, i think it has something to do do with the amount of plants i have, which can kinda be seen on my lame pics

As a result as i've mentioned before, if anyone in london or middlesex wants free guppies just reply

Thanks all.

I think splashludd hit the nail on the head. Had two bad days at the end of week 1 when I lost about 30-40 in two days. So I increased the amount of water I remove and add every day. Ammonia build-up I guess.

My losses now would be somewhere in the area of about 20%-25% and my fry are only 9-10 days old.

20-25% in 9-10 days. What are you losing a day now with the changes.

Congrats! on the spawn. Who made you a successful Betta breeder?

Well counted for more dead this morning. Vacced them out :-(

The hardworking fish were Zuma and Galema:

The method was a combination of wuv's info (90%) with a bit of the traditional Thai breeding method worked in (10%).

They are a lovely couple. Did they get through the process well?

Maybe more water exchange is still needed. It can be hard to lower the ammonia level once it gets really high. Ask my goldies. :*)

They both got thorught the experiance with minimal physical damage. Zuma looked like he was going to die though... I guess he was suffering from post spawn depression.

Giving him a new neighbor solved the problem.

The more I read, the more I think that it is prudent to watch the daddy's demeanor after the fry are taken. I wonder if that's why Ipos, Synirr's boy jumped--to find his lost boys and girls.

Also, the more I read, the more I realize that I should have listened better to what you were trying to tell me about the the two lines of Betta in Thai breeding: Beauty and the Beast. The platinum VT from the student is so peaceful, she is not defending herself well. I have to move her from the sorority tank. she is getting bullied by the crown tail golden sisters and had a bloodied tail the other day.

Sorry for being so pugnastic.

While post-spawn depression is a serious issue, that's not why Ipos jumped. I actually removed Ipos from the tank only because he had started trying to eat his children >_>
He was perfectly fine without them for about a month before jumping.

Hope there was no offense. I was either new at the time or not around yet. Some of the stories of fish jumping are curious. Betta are curious--in several ways. :)

Thanks for staightening me out.
