Looking to buy a new pc. I want a decent one that will play games smoothley and not cost the world. Looked in pc world today and their top spec pcs are 1.5k. Can anyone recomend a pc build shop in London/hertfordshire that makes good towers or is there a shop with better prices than pc world?
Im looking to get a good Nvidia graphics card, can anyone recomend other good components ie cpu to add to the setup. Thanks.

buy a reasonable priced pc and change the graphics card with a better 1 but make sure the computer has either core 2 duo or quad core

and make sure ram is at least 2 gig ddr2 as it will have vista operating system and it's a big resource user

hope this helps

I would have to agree here. If your not going to build it, buy it with 2GB RAM, Quad/Duel Core CPU, and then upgrade the graphics if it already does not have a decent card in. Well said Jen.

Crikey PC World is the last place to buy from - hugely expensive and overpriced. Dell make some good gaming machines if you're looking at the cheap end.

Build your own is the only way to go . Its not as hard as you might think. My advice would to be to get a fast dual core CPU around 3GHz. Get 2GB RAM kit (2 x 1GB) as its so cheap at the moment you can get a good make go for DDR 8500 (1066MHz).

There's a decision to be made as to get Intel or AMD which will throw up much debate about which is best. AMD is cheaper so wins in my book. Dont try and get a quad core just yet unless you have money to burn. With the slow clock speeds out at the moment its just not worth it.

If playing games you need a good graphics card and my advice is to get the best you can afford. If choosing nVidia then the 8800GTS models are good, if going ATI then the 3800 series. You will also need at least 300+GB hard drive.

Now that AMD has bought out ATI then perhaps going for AMD+ATI together may be a good choice but I doubt motherboards out at the moment will be taking advantage of this partnership just yet.

If not building yourself and its cheap then there is something in there that's not that good and will be slowing down your system. This is usually the motherboard as there are few quoted specs on motherboards and this is the most important part of the system. The other cost cutting trick is to supply really cheap slow memory.

But the type of person who goes to PC world to check out pc's is going to find it near impossible to build a pc - easy as it might be for those who know how.

I also agree with this too. People that build PC's say it's easy because they know how. Not everybody wants to build their own computer, they just want it up quickly as possible.

To the OP, do you know anybody near you or a friend that can acctually build computers?

if you have a pc you can use build your own and i will tell you how to step by step but dont bye dell if you want to upgrade later parts cost the earth

Damn, this thread only just reminded me of the gaming rig that I haven't finished, its still under the bed...... hah.

I can reccomend overclockers for great service, I have also bought some ac ryan gear from specialtech before with excellant service.

Problem with self builds. If a part comes doa(dead on arrival) and your not and experienced pc builder or have spare parts about the house it can become very daunting and offputting trying to pinpoint the problem

Thanks for all the replys guys. I posted the same exact question on a computer forum and got basically the same answers. I dont trust myself with computers so I got one from the overclockers site. This one

I got it today :good: ordered on tuesday. Looks a decent machine.

Might have to get a nice 22 inch screen to go with it now.
