You'll want some large holed sponges in the filter as they provide good mechanical filtration for sucking up the large bits of waste (which goldfish produce a lot of), while having some small holed sponges are also good as they provide a lot of surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise and so are better for biological filtration aspect of filtering the tank etc. The more/stronger filtration you have in the tank the bettter really.
