Got a betta yesterday which i have named salsa, hes a lovely solid red. Anyway I noticed he kept flaring at something all the time, it turned out to be the new impulse spray bottle! lol its got like a pink butterfly outline on the bottle and he must think its another betta lol does anyone elses betta flare at strange things?

Also as well I seen a female betta today for the first time in the flesh! and i fell in love  and decided i have to have a tank with some in, so could someone give me a few pointers on how many to have in a tank, i was thinking on 6 and was wondering what size tank to keep 6 in. and would they need hiding places? if so what would be good for that?

They flare at things that look like male betta or maybe stuff that looks like females. Or anything that it want to flare at.

i have a betta that flares ant almost anything that moves :p as for the females i would say 6 in a ten gallon but that is just wut i think dont take my word for it :p

Most of my bettas flare at anything and everything, that is of course till someone in my family wants to see their beautiful tails, then of course they won't flare a bit! hehe  I just got a new ten gallon and it currently has 2 in it, but I'm planning on 4 more, so yea I'd say six.

Let's see:

Batista - flares at everything, including his thermometer, my husband's back, the alarm clock, ink pens, and anything else that happens by.

Booker - Me. He's in a 20 gal community tank with fish, snails, frogs, and ghost shrimp, and I'm the only thing he flares at. -_-

Hunter - Vince, himself in the mirror.

Vince - Nothing really, but he's been sick, that will probably change as he feels better.

I have 6 females in a 10G tank, and it's by far my most favoritest tank ever! :)
Here's the tank:

It's slightly changed since then - like some of the plants are gone, added some hidey spots, etc.
Here's a closeup of one of my girls in it:

I have a large cave, a bridge, a 1/2 log, 2 small rock caves and a large piece of fake driftwood in their tank. I also have plants in it - not enough at the moment and I need to get some more because one of them is harassing another merciliessly and that didn't start until I removed some of the plants.

So, you can do 5 or 6 comfortably in a tank, but make SURE you have lots of safe hidey spots and lots of plants. Also, keep an eye on them. You might end up with one that is just a supreme b*&ch and you might have to yank her out. I have one like that who I'm afraid I might have to yank. They are so fun and cute to watch - they are such snots, and are after only one thing - FOOD!

And as for flaring - Six flares and then swims the other way as fast as he can if you so much as look at him the wrong way. Jasper flares at pencil erasers mostly - he's a beast if there's another fish anywhere nearby... Jack flares like mad at his reflection and does the "I'm way bigger than you, buster!" dance when the light in his tank goes on. Lucky flares at Louis (the blind betta) but gets bored because Louis doesn't flare back. On to Louis - he doesn't flare at all (well, cuz he's blind and has no reason to lol). Petey and Gabriel flare at cereal boxes and soda cans. Nothing else bothers them except each other - they're in my kitchen and whenever the cereal boxes or soda cans are set next to them they go to town. And Archie - well, he flares at Uncle Alfredo, our large red stuffed bull:

And my GIRLS flare at each other for no apparent reason. They just hate each other on some days. They're just total hags when they wanna be.
