what kinda rocks are good for tanks?

Slate is fine very nice looking too.

any rock can be used as long as you follow the rules

1) pour some vinegar on the rock, if it bubbles it's unsuitable
2) boil all rocks for at least 20 mins to clean and kill any germs etc.

Don't forget to wait untill rock is cold b4 putting in tank (don't want burnt fingers or to raise temp of tank too quick)

cool ok i got some slate bits and a few rocks down by a local river and boiled for a hour.

Just in case anyone doesn't know rocks have a high latent heat capacity (so does water). This means that it takes a lot of energy to heat them up but very little to keep them hot. This combined with the fact that they lose heat very slowly means they will stay hot for a quite a while.

The best thing to do after boiling rocks is to submerge them in cold treated water to dissapate the heat quickly.
