i went to the fish store the other day, and in their big tub of live rock they had about 15 or 20 of these guys running loose in there. i asked some questions about them. they dont know what kinda hermits these are. apperently someone was trying to collect shell at corpus christi, tx at the coast, and when she arrived at home she had found out that her shells have come alive. so she gave them to the pet store.

i was told that it was probably not reef safe, which is fine, no reef here, just live rock. it is for sure an algae eater. it has little scoup like rounded off claws, and its been cleaning up the brown algae really well, and it devoured some seaweed i gave it. its about 2 or 3 inches from shell point to point.

any ideas of what kind of hermit this is, or any info pages on them?

thanks

They are sold at my lfs as rock hermits. all appearing at least twice as big as the scarlet hermits

Oh + i dont have any, but i was reasured they were reef safe. i have no experience/proof of this however!

Looks like a Carribean/Gulf Zebra Hermit to me, and would make sense if it was from corpus christi. They're aggressive towards other hermits and smaller snails, but won't bother anything else...

I have about 10 of those. One has gotten pretty big, with a leg span around 2". I've not had any problems with them attacking any of the other hermits. I have a mix of blue tri-colour, electric blue, gulf zebra, mexican red leg and 2 other species that I have no idea on. I'll have to get a picture of them for an ID.

I found one of those on the beach, and didn't know it was a hermit till I got home. I put it in my tank, and it was fine. Their pretty cool lookin, and their usually found around the carribean/gulf of Mexico. Don't worry about corals, they should be fine.

awesome, he's been really nice so far...this thing even lets me hand feed him. he took the seaweed right out of my hands the other day

Yea, I was gonna feed mine a lance fish, and it allmost got it untill my Bloodshrimp attacked me cause it wanted it lol.
Just make sure he doesn't start picking at corals though, they are pretty unpredictable.

I should video tape my bloodshrimp attacking me for a peice of food....lol

Name him Bob for me, that was the name of mine untill the damsel killed him...poor Bob...

Yeah Bloodshrimp definitely aren't shy when it comes to food, so long as you don't make big sudden movements. I feed mine by hand whenever he's near the surface.

If I have food, He'll attack me.
If I put my hand in without food, he will jump on my finger and clean it like he's cleaning a rock or fish, ect.

well so far hes not messing with my condy at all. hes gone over and looked at it, but i think it's afraid of it, cause the condy moved and the crab jumped back real fast. i'm just hoping the condy doesnt kill my crab, or my urchin lol.

The hermit shouold be fine, and my science teacher had an urchin and a condy too. He had no problem with them. Just make sure the condy isnt near any algae, thats usually were urchins like to go.

Here's a bloodshrimp (one in my tank to be more exact) You should get one. Their very beautiful creatures, being bloodred, with white dots, antenae, and legs. They like to hang out under ledges, but if you don't scare it, they will come out into the open.
