What Kind of tank?

Im going to get my own tank and Ive been looking around on-line and I don't know if I should get a long ten gallon or a tall 18 gallon tank for freshwater.

Get the longest and widest tank you can fit in the area you are planning to keep it. Depth is not as important, as oxygen is absorbed from the waters surface, and any air-stones etc you may have will make little difference in a deeper or shallower tank.

Extra water volume never hurts - it gives a little more room for error and lessens fluctuations. If you plan on live plants the the extra height is also good, as they do tend to grow upwards.

It also depends what you want to keep in it. Some fish eg angels like the height.
