What Kind Of Cichlids Are Good For A Community Tank?

I just got a new 46 gallon tank and want to set up a community tank. I want a few bigger fish, but not huge fish, just 5 inches long or so. I was thinking of some cichlids, anyone have any suggestions? I'm also thinking of getting clown loaches, kuhli loaches, a plecostomus that stays small, some barbs and maybe a school of small tetras. Do cichlids like to live in groups, or are they fine living solo?

how about malawi cichlids? you couldn't keep them with neons but you can keep plecos with them.

Or if you want a truly community tank german rams are good, but stay relatively small. also angelfish but they grow quick and also can be a bit nippy.
