i just set up a new tank for my shrimps. after cycled one month. i try to use some feeder shrimp, which is glass shrimp, to test the water.

However, i tried 3 times, they all died within 2 or 3 hours. why?

i bought 2 cherry shrimp to test water, they seems fine, become very red.

so why those glass shrimp live? they are very active in the fish shop.

I'd guess because the feeder shrimp were taken from marine water? What were they being kept at at the LFS?

I'd guess brackish but they said freshwater?

Is very odd though.

i do not know, they are sold as feeder shrimp. just left in a big tank, nothing else, seems not been taken care of very well, but most are active.

when i bought them, they are all fine. i transfer water gradually, slowly about 3 hours. However, once in tank, they will die within 2 hours, all of them, their body gradually turn white then dead.

i also suspect they might be brackish water shrimp, once in tank, they will die soon.

i heard some glass shrimp are fresh water, but some are not. all these shrimps are from same shop, and all died within 2 hours!

I got some of these awhile back and put them into my planted tank...they started dropping like flies. I found the last few of them twitching (really looked dead) on the bottom and moved them to another tank where they revived within minutes. All other life in the tank was fine. I have to imagine that it was probably due to the pH fluctuation from my CO2, too much co2, or something in the ferts (copper?) that was bothering them. I know that many people that have planted tanks keep shrimp and have no problems with either ferts or CO2 bothering them but these were the only two things that I could think of. Hope this helps...

at first i suspect PH problem, however, i transfer them into the tank very slowly, 3 hours, i think any fragile shrimps should be ok, no matter how huge the ph difference is. and the most interesting thing is, when they are in the bucket, they all alive, even add quite a lot tank water. once in the tank, they die very quick.

yes, i guess they are brackish shrimp now. as all my other shrimps doing well in the same tank.

but i was confused, when i boght them, the guy in the shop seems get the water directly from a water pipe, i thought that is tap water.

so does that mean that i can keep feeder shrimp in my marine tank and they will live

Only if you have correctly identified the shrimp to be marine compatible most shrimp species can live in brackish conditions.

Are you using fertiliser in the tank? Its possible you have a high copper content fertiliser which will kill any invert very rapidly.
