What Is Wrong W/ His Fins?

I have noticed that at the end of my betta's fins, it looks a bit "wind whipped". I have had him since the second week in May, and have just recently noticed this. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? Have I done something? Here are a few pictures ....

I don't know if any of these are clear enough to see or not, but it is the best that I could do!

I don't know stats. His water is 25% changed once a week with "drinking water" And he is feed betta flakes every other day.

You need to get a water testing kit. From what I could see, it looks like his fins are curled. Which can be from bad water conditions. Although I'm not saying that's the case here. Just what I can make out from the pics

He has been in one of those vases with the plant in the top of it, and I just switched him over to a 1 gallon tank. Could the plant of been a problem? Would betta's need an air stone, or do they prefer still water?

Vases are not good for bettas. They don't need an airstone as they go to the surface for water, and do like still water. A 1 gal isn't big enough for an airstone. I really would recommend at least a 2.5 gal tank. He would be so much happier and have so much more room. Plus, they don't take up a lot of room if that is an issue

I have a betta with curled fins but he is a little old man, it is probably due to age in mine. You might try to give him about 20 minutes of sun in the morning away from a window. I have mine sitting on the kitchen table across the room, one side benefit is my plants are growing like wild fire (aquatic plants). Do you do 100% water changes on your fish every week or several smaller water changes? Do you use a net on your fish because nets can damage the fins.

Well, he was sitting on the kitchen table infront of a set of french doors (in the vase). But since I moved him to the tank, he is on the kitchen counter. I do 25% water changes once a week, and I haven't used a net.

Would it be possible for you to get him a larger tank?


If nothing else is wrong, he could just be bored or depressed

mine seem to get curled bits at the very end when they are old. Just super clean water with conditioner in and a tiny bit of salt is what I use. But not salt if they have open sores...ouch....My older boys also are the only ones with heaters.......shh dont tell the others!

At the moment, a larger tank is out ot the question. My husband bought me a 20 gallon and the whole set up a couple months ago, and I have kinda gone crazy from there I now have a 20 gallon w/2 platy, 4 mollies, 5 guppy, a 10 gallon w/guppies, a 20 gallon w/15 fry, and the 1 gallon w/ the betta. So no a differnet tank is not in the near future.

Your using drinking water? Do you mean tap? Or bottled? If its bottled then what brand?
Some have additions that fish might'nt be happy with...

I have my bettas in everything from a 1 gallon bowl up to a 10 gallon divided tank. On the gallon to 2 gallon ones I change at least 25% of the water daily with a 100% on average once a month. When I do the 100% I use treated water to rinse my sand flourite gavel mix. It keeps the good bacteria that has built up. Remember just because you got the fish last month doesn't mean it is a young fish. I agree with liz a tiny bit of aquarium salt helps, I use it when I do 100% water changes and it doesn't effect any of my plants. My little old man is at least 3 and is very happy in his gallon forest, until he has to go to a cup for water change. Tell your husband the one with the most useless water wins (my son says you have enough useless water, it isn't a contest).

It is gallon jugs of "drinking water" from wal-mart.

i can't really tell what you mean, but in CTs if they flare too much the fins tend to split a bit.
