hi all have posted this in tropical chit chat but thought id ask here also

i recently redid my my tank as i want to go for the planted tank so have added more wood and plants the thing is ive added a piece of mopani and it seems to be getting like a white fur on it

what is it is it a type of algae?
how does one get rid of it?

cheers howard

Ive heard of mopani wood doing this before, I think its a fungus or something that grows out of the wood, I dont think it'll harm the fish and should go with time. You could always boil it or soak it for a few weeks in a bucket to get rid of it.

sorry no pics at the mo camera flat i bought this wood a good 5 weeks before i did the tank and was soaking the whole time though i did notice that it was still leeching after soaking for that amount of time i was changing the water every other day but dont know why it was still releasing the tannins

but am just a little concerned with this white fur is all try and get a pic later

cheers howard

I've got it on my wood, too. It's been in a new tank for about 2 1/2 weeks. Doesn't seem to be doing any harm, got hundreds of shrimp babies flying around no problems.

It would still be nice to know what it is, though -_-

yes i know just been doing some redecorating gave it a bit of a scrud but dosent seem to come off hopefully post pic a bit later

Yup, that's exactly the same stuff as I've got going by the pic. Having done a bit of googling, it appears:

Its algea or fungus growth, unharmfull to your fish. It can easily be reomoved by a Pleco or taking it out of the water and brushing it off. It sometimes dont go away which the only simple way to remove it permanently is to throw it away and replace.

and

hey, when i first added my mopani wood to my tank i also got a sort of fur stuff growing on it, i put a post here on the board and i was told it was likely to be fungus, i thought it was hair algae. it wasnt harmful to my fish and when i added a plec, he devoured it, i guess its tasty lol

Both taken from different sites. So i guess it's up to you, it doesn't appear to be harmful though. I think I'll leave mine, and see how it develops.

Hope this helps,

Rob.

cheers rob i will be adding a plec sometime this week so hopefully he will clear it

thanks again howard
