My bf saw a fish at WEM when we were looking at the marine tanks. Well, I think it is a fish. I don't know much about saltwater.
All we saw of it was really long spikes. kind of like a porcupine. It was black as well. it was hidden between come rocks, so I apologize for not having a better description. It was in a tank with clowns and damsels.
I hope someone can help, my bf really wants to know the species. If someone can even point me in the right direction of where to research, it is appreciated.

Thanks!

Spikes immediately bring to mind a spiny sea urchin, they are black also. Might possibly have been a brittle star, they are almost always trying to hide so if it was hidden between some rocks that would be typical behavior.

No fish that I can think of come to mind...black volitans lion has "spikes", and they sometimes seek shelter amongst rocks, but I don't think I have seen one that I would call black, despite the name. Porcupine puffer or a spiny boxfish have spines, but again I have never seen one of these that I would call "black".

Did you get a chance to see it move any at all? Could you see eyes, mouth, gills, anything else for us to go on?

oh yea, I saw an eye I think, it was blue or green, although I have a rotten memory, my apologies. I only saw one eye, and it opened and closed a couple of times. The spikes were long, so I didn't see a body.
Would it even be a fish? I should grab a digicam and go see it again.

sounds like a long spined sea urchin to me.

they are black, with a round body and many spines sticking out.
they also have a blue "eye"

Sounds like an urchin?
