it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission
we have got a catfish that is nearly 8" long really fat, almost a dark green in colour, big barbles, spotted fins, sharp spike in it's dorsal fin big black eyes almost cold like jaws' are lol. dark belly aswell, wide bottom feeding mouth. will try to get a picture :kewlpics:

Sounds like a juvinile Tiger shovelnose.

Now if you had said it had short thick barbels with branches on them then we would have known it was a Synodontis species :p Big barbels is a term usually reserved for catfishes of the Pimelodidae and Bagridae families.

It's ok we all start off at some time as a newbie and we all ask questions! :D Good luck with your new tank! - ???

Mystus leucophasis is a aggressive brute of a fish, i have one that is about 8 inches which lives in my 200 gallon tank with a lot of much bigger fish and easily holds its own for territory and food. They can grow up to a foot and will eat any smaller tankmates and bully any fish that are unable to hold their own, as the fish grows so does its aggression.

i know this fish is a brute thats why i had to put him in another tank, he was in the community tank untill the 5 neons went missing in 1 night, we bought him as a syno negrivenis (spelling?) as apparently they look similar when younger and are fine in a community tank. This one (mokey as he's now called) is 8inches and they synodonis ocellifer is is 3 inches the lfs said it will hold it's own against mokey.

she also mentioned a light called the moon light which are good for a catfish tank anyone heard of them

Moon light tubes give off a pale blue light and are great for viewing nocturnal fish but i would advise you buy one half the recomended size for your tank (ie a 24" tube for a 48" tank) as they are still quite bright and full size tubes can still spook fish.

The LFS that sold you the Mystus as a Synodontis nigriventris needs shutting down!! Anyone who claims to have even a ounce of catfish knowledge should clearly be able to see that the two species are about as different as two catfish can be.

I suggest you spend £30 on a cheap digital camera so you can take us some pictures!

THen you will know what fish you have.

 i'm getting really mad with this now, looked at planet catfish and it says that the Mystus leucophasis has white or silver flecks down their sides and my catfish doesn't.

help
You should also consider that your fish is still young and might not have all the markings of a full grown specimen,
