This is one of my sisters bettas, but we don't know what kind it is. Could someone ID this little boy for us? -_-

Excuse the quality, the picture is from a film camera without a macro lens, and then scanned on a bad scanner.

What besides short fins is your criteria for this diagnosis? -_-

I agree with Joker... a veil tail with fin damage/ fin rot.

Had fin rot, and is recovering, trust me, he was far worse when my sis brought him in a month ago. Just his fins in general have us scratching our heads. They seem... Spiney, sort of. He carries himself about like he's permenantly flaring, (his fins) something our other veils dont do. I suppose we'll see what happens with him over time.

I'm sorry again for the crappy quality, but he really isn't suffering from fin rot. I have my own bettas, I know what fin rot is, and I know (as well as my sister) how to treat it. This guy is just really out of the ordinary, and if he's a veil, then he's the strangest viel I've ever seen.

Yea it's a veiltail ... if he was worse than that when you got him I'm suprised a lfs wouldnt have flushed him or just thrown him in a tank exct. exct. Honestly it looks like he has the disease before you got him and got ALOT worse and was left untreated maybe not though ...... :X

:) hi there, good to hear that ur betta is recovering from the finrot  as long as he deosn't get worse, it's nothing life threatening.

Anwaysy, you asked for what tailtype, but since you can't really tell becuase of the fin rot i'd say a veiltail (from waht i can see) or maybe a combtail at best. The half flaring thing is something that a healthy betta would do, it's normal, some vts do have a slightly wider spread than others :)

either way he has gerat colors

Good on you guys for taking care of the little guy. I believe you that he's recovering, in fact, it is quite obvious. To me, it looks like he did have fin rot (like you say), and he's healing well. I can see the clear new growth on the edging of parts of his anal and tail.

He might be a veiltail with double rays, we'll have to see once that beautiful tail grows back. My sister has one like that. It would explain the wider spread than most veils.

That seems like a strange thing to say. The edges of the caudal look like they are healing, not rotting off. How could you determine it was neglected after he got it home , and the finrot got worse?
