Hi, does anyone know what this stuff is and how I can get rid of it? I had it before then have to remove everything in the tank, scrub them until this stuff all came off and then 3 weeks later it all returned and I’ve used algae removal medication during those weeks to try help control it and it didn’t help, I just want a to know if it’s better that I just have a bare fish tank at this point 🤦‍♀️ Personally I think it’s bad to have to keep removing everything and scrubbing it all as it will be removing all the beneficial bacteria that’s on these things too right? Idk but someone please help me !! It’s been a lot worse than it is now but I’d rather completely get rid of it

Does it wipe off in a film and smell musty?
If yes, then it's blue green algae (Cyanobacter bacteria). This is a photosynthetic bacteria and not a plant or algae as the name suggests. It occurs in new tanks and tanks with lots of nutrients. It like red light, low oxygen levels, poor water movement, and nutrients like nitrates and phosphates.

Quite often it will go away on its own after a few months, but sometimes it stays and spreads. If the tank is newly set up and doesn't have fish in yet, drain the tank and wash everything out under tap water, then set it back up.

If you are cycling the filter, you don't have to wash that under tap water. Just put that aside while you clean the tank and then put the filter back in after you have filled the tank with dechlorinated water.
