Hello all,

didnt write in a long time, thanks to all the advice from the previous repliers....amd wondering i have a 90 gallon tank and I believe i have a Diatom problem, well i think that is what it is (brown algae almost with hair) am wondering what would be the perfect clean up crew for that?

thanks

:hi: back

what cuc do you already have an what is your stocking level - also, are you running a nitrate and phosphate remover?

Diatoms in an established tank are a sign that your nitrates are too high and you need to do a water change - do you run a skimmer?

All my levels are fine, i did have a skimmer but i toook it down i had some problems with it, and all i have right now as a cuc are 6 turbo snails,.............right now i have 2 clowns, a goby and a small koran

Cyano can be a real pain to deal with how much turn over do you have in your tank?

What levels are your Phosphates and Nitrates?

Have you added any new sand recently?

How frequently and how much water do you change?

My nitrate level is at 5mg/l and i didnt had any new sand since i first established my tank this about aabout 2 months ago, water changes i change about 10% every 2 weeks..... i had this problem since the beginning and dont know how to get rid of it....

thanks for the reply morri and Seffie

Ah ok, so your tank is not very old at all - the diatoms are all part of a new tank cycling and becoming established.

Have you tested the ro water you put in your tank, before you put it in for nitrates and phosphates or maybe using a TDS meter?

You certainly need a bigger cuc though - what do you have sifting the sand? You only mention turbos? No hermits? No Nass vibex, nov Doves or ceriths?

well the water i used mixed it in a ig bucket with a powerhead and let it sit for 1-2 days then put it in the tank... i let the tank cycle for about 3-4 weeks before putting something inside

well the only thing that i got sifting is a goby....that is why i am asking what would i need and how much of it....cause the lfs dont come with any packages and each of these things have a nice price to it......like the hermits they are 4 dollars each here...and if i need 30-40 of them, the price adds up

Hehe wish hermits where 4 bucks here we pay the same in pounds.

But Hermits will not affect Cyano at all except for orange legs which are very hard to get hold of I would get a phosphate reading as the cyano needs something to feed off which is normaly Nitrates or phosphates.

Nassarius Snails, Cereith Snails and Conchs will disturb it the best cause of action is to cure it

How much flow do you have in your tank as cyano likes low flow areas

Are you using RO or tap water ?

Are you making your own RO if so check your TDS

If buying RO check its phosphates and TDS

I would advise adding a CUC slowly as your tank is still new adding in 40 Snails at once would cause an issue as they would eat all the food in a few days then start dying off.

well am justing using tap water i have a wavemaker that makes 800gph and all my other areas are clean....so am guessing amd slowly going to start with the cuc

Have you checked what levels your tap water are running at before putting it in the tank?

however to be honest the diatoms you are describing still sound like just the normal part of a cycling tank. Test your water and post here so we can see
