What’s the most you’ve invested in a fish aquarium setup ?

I’m amazed how much money this hobby can consume. Just wondering everyone’s maximum and give a brief description of setup. Cost includes tank, all setup equipment, ceramic media’s, hard scape, gravel, sand, fish etc. Bar consumables such as filter floss etc

I guess I want to see how bad my obsession level is.

I’ve spent around $1.1k on my 29g saltwater tank.

I did do a thread with a big poll, asking people how much they had spent. I’ll have to find the link. :)

What I want to know is - How much have YOU spent on a single Discus tank?

wow that’s a lot. i’m only 13 but once i’m older and i have a job then i’ll definetly be spending a lot more money. and i definitely want saltwater.

Salwater tank is indeed a bank breaker I would say .... from the setting up right down to the maintenance needs.

For me that only stick to saltwater and the spending mostly on filtrations ... Canisters and Hang on Back filters closed to 500 green bags ..

I’m only 16. Determination and drive got me to where I am! Once you get to be 15-16, don’t trade school for work. Stick with school, and do work if you can find time.

i’m sure i’ll have time. i even have the owner of my lfs telling me that i can come work there once i’m 15. if i don’t have time for a job then i’m gonna need to find out how to save money. do you have a job?

Huh? That made no sense.

Do you keep saltwater tanks?

Ah, I see. A subject addressed awhile ago like most forums. Resurrecting old threads used to be frowned up in the world of forum etiquette years ago.
As for salt water I totally agree that would be a lot more and everyone’s cost will be different due to tank size, goals, what fish etc. It was just to gage the average people are willing to throw on a setup.
My old setups with fish were £350, then another setup £600 and finally I went all out and purchased exactly the setup I wanted, currently £6,900. Ridiculous amount but I have spares of most things. All the fish probably come to around £1200 ish. The Tank was £2300 alone. Then all the bits just keep adding up. I’ve even got a Co2 system for when I want to brace attempting to get plants to grow in sand and in them temps. The costs should die down to just maintenance now as I have all the fish I want. Although I worked out the cost for fish food a month is £30 (quality beefheart mix) + £20 filter wool (changed every 2-3 days) so £50 a month minimum and that’s without the cost of the electricity and water rates. Friends think I’m mad but it puts a smile on my face.

I’m a conservative reefer. Most reefers will drop $5k on just the tank/equipment - that doesn’t even include the fish or coral!

I honestly try not to calculate total prices now, it is often quite painful.

These days I try to do things as budget sensitively as I can while still providing what the fish needs to thrive. So really I'm looking to set up a tank for under about £200.

That being said, when I kept a salt water tank I'd estimate that I spent close to £8000 on it, including livestock. I had to give myself a bit of a slap when I was considering getting a second one.

Now I stick to fresh water to limit my temptation.

Pheonix's thread asks - 'how much have you spent on the hobby' which is a lot of different tanks for many members.
Unknownfuture's asks - 'what's the most.....single set up'

So they are not quite the same, except for those members who have only one tank ;)
