what is the most rare catfish?

One of the rarest catfishes in the world is Synodontis granulosus which lives only in the depths of Lake Tanganykia in Africa.

Really? We had these on our Import list last week! Damn i should have gotten some, Are they likely to be the real deal or a hybrid or misidentification?

Ben

Most likely a misidentification, the fish is rarely even seen in the wild let alone collected for the aquatics trade, sometimes young Synodontis caudvittatus are mistaken for young S.granulosus but a check with the importer for where the fish came from should clear that up, if its not Lake Tanganykia then its not a granulosus.
There again there is always the chance that they are being farm bred somewhere and we are about to be swamped with them.
I have only ever seen one specimin which was about 4 inches long and priced at £250!!

you would of thought the 'rarest' cat would of been more interesting that a syno!!!

I think the most wanted rarest cat would be more interesting!

There are pleanty of interesting cats that are rare in the trade but are common in their native enviroment, fish like Meredontotus tigrinus, Goslinia platynema, Asterophysus batrachus, Psuedopimelodus fowleri and Hemibagrus wyckii to name a few that are all high priced fish in the trade but considered food in their native countries.
S.granulousus is the only cat i can think of that is both sought after in the aquatics trade and rare in its native enviroment.
