I was told the fish was a female sword tale fish (i think as it was a long time ago) Recently i had noticed it wasn't looking too well... I noticed a thing which looked like an "air-bubble" in it's stomach. After awhile it's fins started to rot at the ends (but i think cleared up a little later), and the fish started to swim in the circles near the top of the tank not really using its back tail and wiggling a lot to swim, i knew it was ill but i didn't know what with.

Every day it swam in circles close to the bottom of the tank untill today i found it dead, what was strange though was i noticed in (what i think) was the stomach was a thing which looked like a pea, roughly the same size and colour (but a little lighter).

I am worried a to what was wrong with it and will my other fish be effected? I have recently moved and had to transfer the fish tank about a month ago (and have lost a couple of fish in the proccess) could this have anything to do with it?

The exact same thing happened to my guppy! I haven't moved the tank and my fish still died so I don't think it was a result of that. Plus, I always treat my water with a stress coat so if the fish is suffering from the same thing I don't think that he died due to stress. Maybe it was some weird infection of some sort? What are your water stats? And how recently have you cleaned the tank?

My water stats i think are fine as no other fish are dieing without explanation (plus i dont have a test kit to find out). Cleaned recently a couple of days ago, my dad did a 10% water change and cleaned the filter in the water in a bucket. No other fish seem to have any problems as of yet, the only problem i keep having is that the plants keep dieing... any ideas?

Do you run an airstone in the tank?


Do you mean she had a pea like growth on the stomach. As I not quite sure what you mean.
Do you feed peas to your fish?
What does it look like when your fish go to the toilet?
Did the fish look bloated, or thin?
How big was the bubble on her tummy?
Did you see anything inside the bubble?

64 litre tank
10 fish in there, 1 glass catfish, 2 rummy noses, 2 brittlenose plecos, 1 female platty, 2 catfish (cant remember the type but they only grow up to 4 inches, black bodies with stripes going from head to tail, are nocturnal and hide under stuff, like bogwood), 1 walking tetra, 1 shrimp.
I dont know the water stats but has been stable for over a year.
I DONT run airstone in the tank (i think), i run a bubble bar at the back, and a standard filter (no carbon just filter spongey things).

When i said a pea like growth i meant when i found her dead, the lower half of her stomach had been eaten or been detached (due to decomposition not anything else) and inside attached to her was a thing which looked like a pea, generally same shape, size and colour.
I DONT feed peas to my fish, just i love fish tropical fish food flakes and algea pellets for the catfish.
The fish looked almost as if she was pregnant (bloated with a flat base as if close to giving birth).
the bubble on her tummy looked about maybe 3mm big was INSIDE and was verticle.
I saw nothing inside the bubble (or what i describe it as) but it looked grey/seethrough, though i could not see the inside of the fish.

Did the fish have trouble maintaining balance in the water before it died?
Did the fish turn up side down?
Also did the fish start to head stand. Nose down, tail up?


Swim bladder, and dropsy, can cause blisters on fish.
As for the peas size thing inside her. Sorry I haven't a clue.

It started swimming with it's head near the surface wriggling more to swim as i've said.. not really useing it's tail. It swam in circles but was always upright, balance was fine. And yes that was what i meant it had a bubble on it's side beneath the skin

Bubbles beneath the skin can be gas bubble disease.

Spinning in circles.
Bad water quality.
Toxins.
Brain damage.
Swim bladder.
Internal parasites.
Fish is dying.

It sounding like she had an internal bacteria infection.

All you can do now is keep a close eye on the rest of your fish.
Some daily water changes.

oh one thing which worries me is that the plants in my tank keep dieing as well... i have no idea which causes that too

Not that good myself on real plants. I only ever used silk plants.
Maybe ask about your plants in the planted section of the forum.
