hi there well its been at least 10 years since i had a tank... i know have kids and my kids love the 1 gallon tank we have now .. so i wanna get a tank.. at least a 20-30 gallon tank.. my question is.. are long tanks better then tall tanks... or tall tanks better the long..

the two tanks i was looking at are. not sure what will be better..

20 Gallon ( long tank )
29 Gallon ( Tall Tank )

i am not sure yet what types of fish i wanna get for them.. i have always had long tanks.. figures give the fish more room to swim... any help would be greatfull

Thanks Monster :D

It largely depends on the fish. Angels need a tall tank where as many streamlined fish prefer long tanks.

IMO, most of the time long is better over tall as fish generally swim back and forth, not up and down though some fish don't do much swimming (so it doesn't matter) or are tall, like Angels so they'll prefer a tall tank.

I think that a long tank is preferable because as it has more surface area, more oxygen is dissolved in the water... someone correct me if i'm wrong though.

iv always had the length instead of height... as stated more room for fast swimmers (i had barbs.)

but my 4ft i asked for a 48x15x18 this way i get a bit of both :)

agreed
unless you are planning to keep something of odd shape such as an angelfish
then tall would be best

I think Pointy meant to say long, not tall. :)

When you have a tall tank less oxygen will be displaced near the bottom of the tank. With less oxygen, less fish. Tall tanks are generally better for keeping just a few larger fish. A long tank is the opposite. Easier for the o2 to get to all levels of the tank. Therefore you can have more enery fish. Hence the comments previous, the fish that like to swim. :flex:

I prefer the "long" tank as well, but it still have to see what kind of fish you're intending to keep.

not sure what kind of fish i wanna get.. it more for my kids to injoy the fish.. so more aless some fish them swim around alot.. and a few that might be calm....

any ideas.... i have decided to get the 20 gallon long tank...

thanks for all the info and help...

any ideas on the kind of fish i shoudl get would be helpfull...

my kids ages are 4 years and a 9 year old... :D

Let's see. For a 20 gallon long with some fast or slow fish;

Fast:
Danios, Tetras, Minnows, Barbs* Rainbows

Slow, calm Fish:
Cories, Otos

Other creatures to add:
African Dwarf Frogs+, Snails, Ghost Shrimp

* A minimum of 5 fish per species with the Danios, Tetras, Barbs and Minnows and a minimum of 3 for the Cories and Otos if you get them. They are schooling fish and do better in groups.
+ Require some special care in feeding.

thanks for info on the fish.. looks like i might end up getting some of them listed...

the frogs sound pretty cool to have also... might look into those also.. but will wait a week or two for the water and tank to ballance out before i buy them...

so thanks for the list... and will keep reading other post for more ideas...

I think Pointy meant to say long, not tall.

she/he was talking saying something about angelfish, i do believe that PK did mean 2 say tall because angels need a taller tank.

I agree with Teelie, I'd definitely go with danios and cories, danios because they get up ato some crazy swimming antics and cories because they're sweet and have twitchy whiskers. your kids will love them. :)

ok im sorry i got a 29 gallon long tank..... i thought it was a 20 gallon....lol...
