What Is An F1 Firemouth?

I have a firemouth cichlid but what is an F1 Firemouth??

F1 stands for Filial 1, this means the offspring of 2 wild caught (F0) fish.

Ahh I see so if I got mine from a shop then its unlikely to be the offspring of 2wild caught fish?? Do they cost more?? More terratorial?? Or just more colourful?? My one seem very colourful and looks just like the one above which is a very nice fish the only difference is mine has darker strips and more visable

I wouldn't think a shop would sell F1 fish for cheap, as they are rarer than tank breed specimens, so I would think they would be more. They have better genetics as they have not been inbreed time after time, so they show more natural behaviour, and are far better at parenting! They usually are a lot more colourful that the tank breed fish, again as they have stronger genetics, and natural selection has been allowed to take its course with no human interaction.

Was it sold to you as an F1? F1 fish will cost more and continue on a price scale (Wild, F1, F2 etc). I dont know if an F1 would be more terratorial (Although I suppose this would go with being more closely related to a wild fish?). The advantages being that they are as close to a wild fish as possible, they generally have better colouring, good genes and can be healthier.

Cheers for all the info I don't know much about cichlids, always asking questions on here as sometimes the internet says different things so is F2 wild caught with a captive bread one?? Ill post a pic soon when I get my camera as the one on my phone is rubbbbish, the ones the have in the maidenhead aquatics near me have no colour atall I got mine from a small store near heathrow airport a while ago and they all looks far better and the colours are much brighter

F1 would have parents that are wild caught, F2 would have grandparents that are wild caught.
