My little Sakana is at it again... I think it's ich, but he's in a tank with three other bettas (dividers, of course) and neither of the other two have it. His head is a little discolored... it's almost taken on a marble pattern, just overnight. He also had some good growth going on his tail after his bout of fin rot, and that growth has pretty much disinigrated overnight. Neither of my other fish are affected with ANYTHING. Koenig's tail is a little torn up, but he has a really big heavy tail, and he chews it. Other than that, the other two are fine. I have quarantined Sakana, put him in a bowl of water at about 83 degrees (slowly warmed up, of course) with coppersafe and antifungus. What else can I do for him? Any ideas as to what's going on? He's acting like a healthy fish... flaring, swimming, eating... he hasn't been nesting, but he doesn't nest very often, anyways, so that's not out of the ordinary. So what's wrong with him? :(

Poor Sakana. He's having a pretty rough time these days, isn't he?

We're going to need a little more information, though. How is his behavior as of this moment? Also, take a flashlight and shine it on him. If he has ich, you'll see white spots on him, like grains of salt or sugar. They may be a little clustered, but, more likely, they'll be spread all over his body. If he has velvet, it will appear as a fine gold or white dust on his fins and body. In either case, if it's parasites, he is likely to be breathing heavily, flicking his body around, and trying to rub against anything, including the bottom and sides of the tank.

Please report ANYTHING you see, even if it doesn't seem relevant. It's the only way we can help you make a proper diagnosis.

Sorry about that, Sakana seems like he has some sort of underlying cause, he's having a rough time.

Maybe more info and we can help.

Well, he is flicking around a little bit, but I don't think he's trying to rub on anything... What's wierd is that a couple days ago, I saw about 10-15 white spots on his back, so I quarantined him, and they went away, so I put him back in the tank, and he got them again. I have him quarantined again, and he's only been quarantined for a little over an hour, and all but three of the white spots are gone again. It's just so weird that neither of the other fish have them. His tail stumps me, too... it literally looks like the bottom inch of his tail just disinigrated, leaving only the rays. Other than the flicking around, he's acting perfectly normal. He's swimming around, flaring, eating, all that fun stuff. I shined a light on him... I couldn't tell if there was any gold dust or not, he was moving around too much. Funny guy, he doesn't mind the bright flourescent tank lights, but he HATES the flashlight. :p

I'm just so stumped, because an hour ago, about half his back was covered in white spots, and now all but three of them are gone again. And his tail... that REALLY has me stumped. :p

He does have a white area under his chin, but he always gets that when he's stressed... it doesn't look cottony at all, just like his little chin turned white. That wasn't there before I quarantined him, so I'm pretty sure it's from the stress of being moved to the little cup.

His head and face do look odd... like they are changing color. They were a dark brownish color... they now look like they are turning light blue, but kind of like a marble pattern.

He also does not appear to be breathing heavily.

That's about all I can think to write for now... if you have more specific questions, let me know.

I'm not sure, but it sounds like a huge fungal issue.
but if it were a fungal issue, wouldn't the other two fish in the same tank be showing problems, too?

Also, I just thoroughly cleaned the tank they are in and added a filter less than a week ago.

Possibly. I'd keep an eye on them too, just like any communicable problem, they may or may not get it. Fungus is a tricky thing and can sometimes be living in a host or awhile before symptoms show.

Also, I forgot to ask, what is your tank set up? I know your not dumb but there ARE dividers in your tank right?

Yes, definitely. ;)

They are in a ten gallon divided three ways with a Duetto50 filter and a whisper submersable heater.

ok, phew. just making sure. One of my friends's bettas had simaler symptoms to yours, some fish with chewed up tails and the like, as well as some turning odd colors and constantly flaring. went over to check it out and found they all shared a tank...with no dividers.

alrighty, here's a pic... it's not that great, but you can see what I am talking about with his tail, and also a little of the discoloration on his face.

Could you get him to flare for the pic? Maybe we could see his fins better.

That looks to me rather like he's been chewing on his own tail. Has he ever done this?

I would, but I don't want to stress him out any more than he already is. It's only his tail that is bad... his other fins are fine.

Just caught him rubbing his face on the bottom of his cup... you don't think it could be columnaris, do you?

But that still wouldn't explain his tail........

And if it's columnaris, what do I do for it?
