Hey
I was just wondering, if you buy your LR from your LFS (which will already be cured), and you take it home in a bucket of saltwater...will you be able to add it to your tank and no need to go through the cycling process?
The reason i ask is as my seahorse tank is covered with aiptasia and i need to upgrade, so i was thinking of ditching all the current LR and starting fresh (or sell it back to the LFS). So would i be able to add the LS, water and then the next day the new LR...and then either the same day or the next, the SHs? Or maybe a week later? They'd be able to stay in their old tank for as long as they need, but id like to move them over ASAP

Cheers

we bought our rock from a chap on ebay who was breaking down his tank (covered in lovely purple coraline), we saw no die off even though we transported in water for an hour. We however bought some LR already cured(apparently) from our lfs (to fill a gap) and had quite a bit of die off - so there probably isn't an easy answer to this question

I know if I was buying LR again I would source someone breaking down a tank within approx. an hours trvel time - cheaper, nicer and probably get some nice free hitch-hickers

I'd think that if you moved the rock fast, kept it wet, and it didn't sit very long in the bucket then chances are it should be ready pretty quick. Of course, set up the new tank w/lr and test the water for at least a week to make sure you don't have any spikes and then move the sea horses.

I'm new to salty stuff, but I think that's how I'd do it :)

You can do it that way, just be careful with the water in your car. Spilling saltwater everywhere inside a steel vehicle isn't the best thing ;)

Thanks everyone....i'll defo do that, will cut down the cycling process at least :)

The LFS i'd get the LR from is a 10 minute drive....

You should have seen my old man's face when we went to pick up my LR in his nice new XJ6  not a happy man

You don't need to keep the water in buckets. Just use polyboxes with water in.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but I was just wondering if poly boxes are strong enough to be filled completely with water? Im moving the contents of my nano son and a polybox would be better then using buckets but I was worried if the weight of water in it might be to much?

We had them at least half filled when we were moving CFC's fish around. you don't get 10" disc motoro rays into bags really.

If you are filling them a long way, try and be careful to avoid any twisting or shearing loads which are more likely to damage the box.
