I just bought a 100 gal tank that was posted on my local craigs list I thought it was just a basic tank but he had been reeding Discus I just wanted a tank with a filter to get me started but when we picked it up it is great but there is a massive and complicated pump and filtration system which I am greatful for but my husband and I have not had anything larger than 10 gallons since we were very young and I think my mom had a 50 gal one once but we barely have a clue how to hook it all up so if anyone would want to look at pics and give me any info it would be appreciated. Here are some quick photos of the equipment and I am wiping it down as it is dusty but I want to do this right if you have any advice please.

If I can figure it out I hit the jackpot lol

Looks to be a sump filtration setup, perhaps with a timer for lights or some sort of auto water change system. If it is an auto water change system I would not worry about that too much.

The tank beneath is where your filter media goes, there is probably a standpipe or two in the tank, these are overflows that lead to the sump. The pump goes in the sump beneath the tank, pumps water to the tank. When the water level reaches the overflow level it returns to the sump.

The box marked F is either a heat controller for the heaters, which usually go in the sump, or for a ventilation fan in the hood, if he was doing discus it is probably the former. The black box with all the white buttons could be for lights, or for auto water changes, depending on how it is set up.

Nice setup, the gear in the bottom is not cheap.

are you bleeping kidding me?$100 :hyper: you did hit the jackpot.the possibilities of that tank are almost endless.what do you plan on doing with it?you could have shoals or a massive speices tank or just a nice number of large beautiful fish.sorry,i'm just a little jealous at the moment.

$100 is a tremendous deal. Give it time, and enough folks looking it over, and it will be figured out.

I thought I had done well I have almost all the parts cleaned and we are just going to get several species of beautiful large fish we just wanted a large tank to look pretty in the living room because I loved my small tank so much I am just overwhelmed with the equipment lol thank you all for the info I will gladly accept any help I can get Oh and the hood hold 4 flourecent lights that came with it I think once this is all set it will be my new best friend

The box in the bottom looks like a sump filter. There's a black thing that looks like the bottom part of a protein skimmer I've seen at the LFS. Was it a marine setup?

All things failing, if you can't figure it out, $100 is a major deal just on the tank and stand - you might be able to justify gutting the equipment you can't figure out and replacing it with new stuff.

ok so I keep seeing the abbriviation LFS can you tell me what this means? I know I probably look stupid now huh?

Don't look stupid by any means, heh. There's a lot of abbreviations that get thrown around casually in any hobby. LFS means Local Fish Store. Usually applies to anyplace that sells fish, some people use it to distinguish fish-focused stores from general pet stores, or small shops from the big national chains.

i have a couple of friends that are really good with this kind of stuff,i will show them these pics and i will get back with you tomorrow.i'm sure you'll get lots of help before then.

thank you all so much for the help I also got in there with a flashlight and some of the stuff is for regulating co2 which I am pretty sure I wont be messing with that lol but any info is so so so appreciated I cant wait to get it together I am leaving it alone for tonight since the kids are in bed now and will be doing more research tomorrow

Hi,

sounds like an amazing deal you got - lucky burger!!! hehe.

Might be silly to ask this but could you not contact the person you bought it from and check with them the best way to set it up etc? If they had it up and running and had bought all the gadgets etc for it then it might be your quickest way to figure it all out.

Goodluck with it and can't wait to see it all set up. I would be having discus in it!!

wow that's a hell of a bargain! lucky you.

i would suggest you post these pics in the hardware section, someone there may be more able to help you :good:

Let's see if my thoughts are anywhere near accurate (though I hold little hope).

In this image one can see two switches on the left hand side, presumably for something in the system, though I cannot see leads from here. I presume if you follow them you will find what they control (or just plug everythign in and hit them and look swhat changes :D)

To the right one can see a controller box which can be set (presumably) to come on at certain times of the day. Follow the lead coming from that to see what it is controlling (Tolak is most likely right with either heaters or fans).

At the top to the right of this is a tube with bioballs in it. I would guess that this is some sort of nitrate filter where a slow flow allows anoxic conditions for anaerobic bacteria to develop to convert nitrate to nitrite to ammonia to nitrogen gas. I assume there is a pump somewhere that feeds it.

Below this is a stop-cock which has an empty hose end. I woudl assume that something else needs water to run through it and a hose would lead from this to somewhere else.

aquarium002.jpg

At the top left you can see the stop-cock and the nitate filter. Looking at the end of the nitate filter it may be that the filter is connected tot he stop cock. The bulk of the picture is the glass sump, which has been described above by Tolak. You can see the bent white tube which is the intake for the pump mounted to the left of the sump.

The black box sitting on the right hand side of the sump looks to be some sort of trickle tower. Is there a large drain pipe which leads from the tank to over this spot? If so it is somewhere to place fitler media in the air to allow greater access to oxygen and thus larger colonies on the media.

Below this at the front is a white control box. Find the other end of the power chord to see what it controls. It looks like it might want a probe to the control something.

Now this photo has me questioning the possibility of the black box being a trickle tower. I can't see a pipe leading to it. I can, however, see what looks like a draw where you can pull out and change something like a sponge (which perhaps sits over the media) so it may be a trickle tower after all.

There are a number of switches which you would need to follow wires from to establish their purpose and a small grey control box. The box has up, down and repeat/cycle looking buttons. I assume it is to monitor and/or control something.

I can't help much more than that I am afraid, but I hope the above helps a bit. If you want to find out more ont he control boxes, look for what is written on them and then put that in Google.
