I'm not really sure what traits are dominant in livebearers, but I am pretty sure that you don't have to worry about brothers and sisters breading (sick 'ey! :alien: ). Genetic defects caused by breeding fish from the same strain usually don't become apparent until several generations of breeding. In some cases you might actually want to breed brothers and sisters if they have traits and charactaristics that you want develop. Hope this helps, and have fun! :D

yeah ok thank alot but ermmmmmm.......does anone know anthing about color of babies will they be al grey like my livebeaeres book says!!!! :-(  :*) plzzzzz help!!!

Here's a pretty stupid question...but I am new to this whole fish keeping thing! I have heard people say their fish have mated. How can you tell?

Well, unless you know the dominant genes of platies, I'd go ahead and say that you'll probably have a mix of red and yellow fry. It's not like mixing up paint and getting one ugly color.

You can tell if they've mated when the female fish will balloon in size. Unless by some incredible chance you see them going at it. :*

I started out with one male red wagtail platy and one female red wagtail (also in tank were one Mickey Mouse male (given away), one Tuxedo male (died), and one blue swortail male). The female only mates with the other wagtail. They produced fry, two of which I kept - both female. Big Daddy wagtail has now mated with his daughters - SICKO - and I now have 3 lots of fry - so in answer to your query - they aren't that discerning - but I haven't had any cross-breeding. The babies are all cute!

ok lol  ur babies sound nice but u didnt really answer my question well eveutually she will have babays and i wil be able to tell u bt that will be about 2 week away :)

I guess if no one have the answer to your question, you might just have to find out yourself! Let us know what happened! I wouldn't worry too much though because you probably won't keep all the fry anyhow unless you plan on getting a bigger tank for all them babies!

probabaly not but in the fitrue i do plan to get a corner tank heheh my mum doesnt no yet so its only a sneaky plan hehehhe  :shifty:

And where do you plan on putting this corner tank? You're gonna tell your mum that you woke up one morning and it just appeared in your room?

mixing platy colours wouldn't be crossbreeding, thats when to different creatures breed.

nope thats hybrinazation. cross breeding is when u mix the same sort of aniamal but different types eg.. greyhound a nd laberdor, both dogs but different types so its cross breeding i think :D
