:D I just purchased a 46 gallon, bow front tank, but I'm unsure of fish it will house. My 29 gallon currently has livebearers, so I want this larger aquaium to be filled with bigger fish. I was thinking of getting Angelfish or Gouramis or maybe barbs. I haven't set up the tank up, but when it's all cycled I plan to design it like the lost empire of Atlantis with columns and a ton of live plants. My question is, what fish can go with Anglefish? What can go with Gouramis? Are both of these fish difficult to keep? I haven't decided what I wanted, but I'll have to chose one or the other.

I think you should get a pair of angelfish for sure and build your tank around them. I think gourami would be fine with angelfish. They aren't aggressive at all and are easy to care for. Also, small tetras would look good too. I saw a heavily planted tank that has fish you are describing. It had cardinals, a giant gourami, a pearl gourami, and 2 angels. Had some swordtails and platties too. It was in the tfh magazine in an article called, "Building a community tank, doing it right the first time".

I think the fish you want would all do well together. If you wanted barbs go for a cherry barb because they aren't as bad fin nipppers as tigers.

Its nice to see another angel lover on board  . Angels are great for a community tank and in my opinion nothing beats them. If for some reason you decide not to go with them how about a school of rainbows? Some varieties can get up to 6 inches.

:) What other species of fish go with Angelfish? I'm not an angel expert, so I don't know what to mix with them. How large to cichlids get?

:D Thay sounds great! Do you have any suggestions of what Gouramis I should get? I don't want something too large, but something pretty. Would the Angelfish eat the tetras if I get small ones like Neons?

:D Thank you for the Gourami website. I'll study it and hopefully find some that I want. As soon as I get the tank cycled and decorated, I'l post a picture of it.

Sorry to be the dissenting voice! I dont think Gourami's and angels are great tank mates, I have found either species ends up getting chased and nipped.
Angels go really well with small cichlids such as Apistogramma and Rams, tetras such as the Black Phantoms that I recently added to my tank are really nice too.
To see my 47G bow front and the fish that share it with my angels, visit my gallery HERE. Catfish such as smaller Peckoltia species and cories are a good mix too.

Hi Sasha :)

I would suggest pearl gouramis. They're really great.. very peaceful and pleasant creatures..and their 'pearl-studded' bodies look fantastic under lighting. They prefer to be with their own kind so i would suggest to get a couple or more. My pearl gouramis get along great with their tankmates. They're very curious and often use their filamentous 'feelers' to quench their curiousity. They might get harrassed by fast swimmers like blue zebra cichlids and shy away, so it's best to keep them in a large tank where they don't get intimidated by these fast swimmers.

Blue and platinum gouramis are also nice, and they're more spirited than pearl gouramis but i personally prefer pearls better.

Hope this helped! :D

;) Thank's for the advice. I'm still not sure if I want Angelish or Gouramis. If a decide on Gouramis, I would get a couple Pearl Gouramis. I think they're so beautuful with the body flecked with white dots. I have one question about Pearl Gouramis. Do they go good with livebearers and tetras? That's what it said on a website, so I want to make sure they'll live together happliy.

Angelfish are very interesting too. I love their long flowing fins and they look so graceful. What kind of cichlids are colorful and would get along with Angelfish? The new tank is 20 inches deep and 36 inches long. I think those dimensions would be big enough to hold a couple of Angels if I decide to get them. Are Angelfish difficult to keep?

Hi Sasha :)

When planning an aquarium, it's a good idea to think about getting fish who will reside at the top, middle and bottom levels.

Gouramis, which are air breathers live primarily at the top. Pearls are an excellent choice, but so are any of the others. The pictures you see of them never do them justice. But, if you have angels, they will chase and nip at the gouramis.

Gouramis are territorial fish, but are only a problem with other gouramis. Do not over stock them and you will be fine. I have never had trouble with gouramis behavior toward other species.

For the middle of the tank, a school of small fish is nice. I like glowlight tetras, but there are many interesting schooling fish available. You will probably want to choose an active one. Another choice is the glass catfish who will find a spot among the plants and pretty much stay put. Here's a link about these unusual fish:

To add interest and activity to the bottom level, IMHO, nothing beats a school of corydoras. They are good community tank citizens who get along with everyone and are seldom bothered by other fish. Here's a link that will show you the many varities:

I've kept all these fish in my community tank with good results. :D

:D Thank you so much for explaining some examples for the tank levels. I'll consider the fish you told me about and study them more until I arrive at a final choice.
