Hi,

I recently got the green light to set up a 40 gallon, and I really wanted to put a rainbow shark in there, however I am unsure who else to stock the rainbow shark with, as I want a good looking fish that can get along with my rainbow shark

Any help is appreciated

medium sized barbs, danios, or rasboras could work. Always remember to cycle your tank ;)

Im not quite sure, what will look good in a 40 gallon and how many of them?
Well, there are many types of them... Im going to be getting lambchop rasboras but for your 40g I'd do harlequin rasboras... There are also cherry barbs which look really pretty... These are just a FEW examples and I'd recommend researching on those different types of fish... And as for how many id say 9-11 of harlequin rasbora sized fish

Boisterous tetra are another option, such as blueberry, Columbian, or bleeding heart tetra. Dwarf neon rainbowfish would also work. For centerpiece fish, three spot gourami, angelfish, kribensis, or leopard bush fish could all work. Of course, viability depends on the schooling fish you choose.

All schooling fish prefer larger schools and will look more effective in greater numbers too. For how many fish, that depends on the species and other tank mates you choose.

Not with the shark he has... Larger tetras are an option though... Rainbowfish will overstock the 40g with the shark

Those are larger tetras and dwarf neon rainbowfish won't overstock a 40 gallon.

Got to be careful stocking a tank with a Rainbow Shark, honestly I would not put in small fish like lambchop rasboras or anything similar in size as they would be stressed the entire time they can see the rainbow shark.

Definitely would not put in any plecos or catfish as the rainbow may bully them as it grows older.

I would get fish that can hold their own and are big enough not to be stressed by the rainbow, maybe tiger barbs?

They wouldnt if there wasnt a shark in there... to me thats overstocked.
To avoid needlessly cluttering this post I'll stop arguing this, but I'll say that a fish that averages to the smaller end of 2.5"-3" is no different than the average barbs that would be recommended to pair with a rainbow shark.

Those would be good... Also I didn't recommend lambchops I said: "probably harlequin rasboras size and up"

To me, even the tiger barbs are overstocking... When you have a large shark in the tank it takes up some space. 1 rainbow shark needs 30 gallons of water and rainbow fish (including dwarf species) need 30-40+ gallons of space.
