Hi

Well after a few weeks of problems and fish deaths I'm trying to come up with a plan of what fish to add to my tank. I've had a real mishmash of fish up to now after some incorrect advice from a fish shop i.e. Mono's to a freshwater tank which died today ! Also have had a number of Gourami death's due to a fungus which affected one of the Mono's also.

Just recently have had a real attack on the Nitrate levels as these were continuously around > 40 ppm. I've used a Nitra bag and this has now reduced to around 20-30. The Ammonia and Nitrite appear to be around 0ppm. The area still of concern is the Ph which seems to stay around 8 !

At present I have the following in the tank

6 x Neon Tetra
2 x Red Tailed Guppies
3 x Clown Loach
2 x Cichlids (A Name like Jim something - sorry not sure !)
1 x Female Dwarf Gourami
1 x Albino Pleco

Now I'm really keen to keep the Gourami species of fish but am concious of the fact that I have Cichlids in the tank which seem to be thriving. I have been told that I should be able to keep Pearl Gourami's by the shop or at least Gourami's that size. I did buy a Community tank book but this doen't seem too helpful in this area - anyone recommend a good book for appropriate fish for the tank.

Anyway would appreciate some advice here on what to do. I know that the Gourami is still alive but is often hounded by the Cichlid's. Should I stick with Cichlid type fish or can I add something like larger Gourami's bearing in mind the Ph of the water !? Should I take the Cichlids back to the shop ?

Very confused at the moment as you can tell !

Any help much appreciated and happy xmas to all members.

You should rehome the cichlids if they are harrassing the gourami and you want to keep the gourami, or ID your cichlids and rehome the gourami if you want to keep the cichlids.
We need to find out how many gallons your tank holds, some of your fish will grow massive- albino plecs are often sailfins, and sailfin plecs can easily grow to 2ft long, clown loaches also get to a foot long- both of these fish in their present numbers would need at least 100gals if you are planning on keeping them for the rest of their lives, and they can both live to 20-30yrs+.
What genders are your guppys do you know?

The tank is a 125 ltr Juwel Rio or 33 US Gallons I believe. From what you're saying it looks as though I have quite a problem later on ! At present the Loach's are small but the Pleco is quite large now and that's after a couple of months !

Thanks for the response
