Bettas don't need a heater and a goldfish would be a very bad idea because the rule of thumb is 20 gallons for the first goldfish and 10 extra gallons for each additional goldfish because they poop alot even more than a common pleco and the goldfish gets up to 8" long and live up to 20 years.

I agree that you could put a betta in a non-heated tank as long as your normal room temp is in the 70 and up range. the tank temp will be a little warmer because of the lights and the heat the filter pump creates. I had one betta tank set up for about 4 months without a heater and it stayed right around 76 degrees all the time. I only put a heater in for the summer when I knew I would be running the AC and thought the temp may be too cool. I will take it back out (or just unplug it) this winter when I am running the furnace.

Actually, goldfish can get way bigger than that in the right environment. Goldfish that are 2' long and weigh several pounds are quite common in ponds. But the point is correct that they aren't good for a 10 gallon unless you plan to upgrade soon.

The heater is required depending on which part of the world you are in. If your normal room temperature is in the mid 20's there would be no need for heaters.

Hey! Bettas are too exciting!!! And it looks to be one of the only options in this case.

Goldfish are unexciting? Only if you keep them in 2 gallon bowls...

2 in a ten gallon is still too small for them to thrive ;)

If I were setting up a 10g without a heater, I would probably go with White Cloud Mountain Minnows. A tank featuring them would be very pretty and very active, if that's what you're looking for. A nice school would be very attractive alternative for those who don't want to invest in a heater.

But heaters aren't that expensive. :/

As someone who has started with goldfish and worked their way up to tropicals, I'd say that keeping tropicals is a little bit easier than GF's IMO. Goldfish I found were very susceptable to illness, and had requirements that not many people would be willing to give them. Coupled with their limited tankmates, requirements for exceptional filtration and the fact that you can have more fish per gallon (typically) if you go tropical, the heater would be a decent investment.
