hello all,

Im wondering which fish can go into a 20g tank. Should i get high or wide? Do platies and danios mix in a tank well?

thanks

Wider tank provide a greater surface area for proper oxygenation, although, with a 20 gallon, it's not a big problem. Just make sure you have a more than adequate filter to keep your water agitated.

Yes, platys and danios will be fine. Just don't overstock.

If you go to www.peteducation.com and go to the fish section, you can see a list of fish. Look at their profiles and on the bottom, you can see a list of other fish they are compatible with.

Hi cat.fish :)

Do you have or plan to get any catfish? If so, they are bottom feeders and the long tank would be better than the high.

I just wondered since I saw your name. ;)

What would you like to see in your tank? :D

Most beginners, myself included, choose some form of the community tank. In a 20g long, you could probably comfortably house 3-4 different species of different sizes and personalities. What kind of fish do you like? If you could only have one fish, which would it be?

I want to see danios, and some guppies. how many would i be able to put in?

thanks for all your information so far. if you have other tips for a beginner in the fish keeping hobby please pm me.

I would guess that 6 zebra or pearl danios and 3-4 guppies could share a 20g long just fine. Add 3-4 smaller corydoras and you have a nice community tank with active, peaceful, and undemanding fish at all levels.

I believe guppies like planted tanks, something I'm trying with my first tank. I'm finding real plants pretty easy to keep and good for tank stability so far. And there are plenty of lower light, lower maintenance plants available.

I don't know much more about livebearers, so hopefully someone with more knowledge of them will come along. Or you could introduce yourself to the Livebearers Thread!?

HTH

Best thing is just to visit several LFSs and look at their tanks and see what interests you. Asks questions about their fish, compatible, any special requirements, etc. Then if it interests you, write it down and when you go home, do more research on the fish. Sometimes LFS don't really watch there fish as closely as us hobbyists, so they might have forgotten to include something.

Also, some LFSs state like certain fish, like skirt tetras, are community fish and are fine to go with any other fish. This is incorrect. Those who have kept them, know they can be fin nippers and most have a heck on an attitude.

thank you all for all you help i should be getting the tank in about a month. talk to you later. ;)

when i first started into tropical fish i startred with a 15g tank and i started with a community tank with a betta and 2 black tetras and 3 zebra danios and then i got a common pleco (not knowing what they were or how big they grew, i was looking for an "alge eater") i actually only had a bubbler with no filter and my tanbk was always clean :/ wonder how that works and then i bought a 25 long and bought more sensative fish like an angel and some kuhli loaches and a brown ghost(i had no clue what this was i just saw it swimming in the tank and bought it) and so on till now
