What Filter For My 46 Gallon?

So I have a few questions. My friends are getting a 46 gallon tank for college and i am wondering what filter they should get. We know not to get an undergravel. I was thinking a eheim, but what do I need with it? Does a canister filter need to have a powerhead attached to it?

My tank is 47 us gallon..

After asking people on this site and other LFS, the eheim filters seem to come out tops..

I went for Eheim 2026 Professional II - with media for £99.95.. ... which was quite a good bargain.. you can order online or via the phone..

Oh.. and this will provide you with everything you need, IF, you buy the package deal with the media included. The standard package just gives you the filter with the blue sponge and poly pad. You also need the other efimech and substratpro (something like that) that comes with he media pack.

Set up yesterday, so i will have to wait and see how it goes...
