Hi i have a juwel rio 180 and want to buy the best external filter i can for my tank. i currently have a aqua pro 1 but i dont rate it much so any advice would be great before i spend my hard earned cash cheers john2708

IMO tetratec EX1200, it big for your take, but better filtration, cleaner water and if you upgraded your tank you dont have to worry about a new filter etc

i used one on my roma 125 and the water was crystal

Tetra ex1200 would give you around 3x turnover, many consider that too low. even so, many also find it sufficient. when looking at filters, instead of taking the makers volume claim. look at the pump power and divide it by two. if the result is 3x or higher, its the power of filter you need. only Eheim and Aqua one, offer a "filter" flow rate, so deduct 10-20% from their pump claims.

on a tank only 10 gallons bigger than yours i have a Eheim 2224 (about 450lph) and a Hydor Prime 30 (about 550lph) that seems to work fine.
