and how does it compare financially to fresh water tanks? i hear they're expensive to go about.

depends entirely on what you wish to keep?

just fish
fish & inverts
fish, inverts & corals

you can run a marine tank much like a fresh water tank, on a cycled filter so cost difference will only be the price of salt and more expensive fish. This is a bit old school and live rock is reccomended as filteration though, this opens up more options too you

hello mate

have a look at my journal in my signature

I recently converted a small 15g tank to marine. I;ve listed prices and this gives you a basic idea of costs.

It does cost more to set up but once set up running costs won;t be a great deal more

The expense will be when you want corals etc and you start battering your credit card!! its an inevitable side effect of marine keeping!! lol

How long is a piece of string? There are alot of different methods, each with fans and critics. My first a rio 240 was converted including live rock and lighting for around £300 and it was a very successfull tank. My current system has been set up with the knowledge it will be expanded for this reason everything is overkill. My tunze tubelle including light controller thing and magnets cost over £200 on it's own. Ebay is a good place to buy thimgs, especially live rock and it is already cured and full of life. I even buy fish from there to help reduce the amount captured.
