hey everyone,

my bro got me an aquarium all set up for xmas but then jetted back to sydney, leaving me to figure out what my fish r & what they eat (we accidently went to a really stupid dodgy place, so not much info or help supplied unfortunately). So far i've figured out i have:

2 male guppies (nearly fought to the death but seem fine now),
a neon tetra (i'm told i need to get more than one of these - is that true?),
a black marble angelfish (most placid of the lot, not eating at the moment but seemingly perfectly healthy otherwise, & apparently will eat the above eventually - could anything be wrong with him?)
a kribensis (possibly albino, not sure yet - is pink tummy that comes & goes normal?),
a black skirt tetra (does he need mates like the neon?),
& 2 that i haven't yet been able to identify - a longish clear/silver one with v-shaped tail & 2 black dots on the tail; and something that looks like a miniature of something u'd go fishing for but is small - kinda rounded, getting red on fins & tail, & has bluish tinge coming on it's upper body.
oh yeah & i have 1 snail which should be enough (i think??)

i'm just feeding them a tropical fish flake blend (a little each morning coz i've heard it's REALLY bad to overfeed) + a thing that sinks to the bottom once a week. i have a power head filter (not the one under the stones) & 3 different types of weed that i'm trying to grow in there, & i'm trying to get a rock thing for them to hide in as soon as i can find the money. i do weekly water changes of about 25% & treat the water & everything before it goes in, & my pH is basically right on 7. i haven't had any of my fish die, just my original snail but i don't think he was healthy in the first place. my tank is 59cm long, 38cm high & 33cm ft back, & has a bubble thing connected up to a smallish dragon arrangement. anyways, sorry this has been so long & complicated but i'm just wondering if anyone here can answer those q's above & tell me if i should be doing anything else.

thanx heaps guys.

so that makes your tank about 80 liters, which is about 20 gallons.
I would recommend you buy 4 or more of the two tetras you have , and take the angel fish bake to the store. angels grow fairly big and would be cramped in a 20 gallon.
Is your tank cycled? if you don't know what that means, you can read the pinned articles in the beginner questions forums.
what your feeding them is OK, but if you can stop by your fish store, try buying some freeze dried food like blood worms and tubiflex, fish like a little variety.
can't offer you to much advise on your fish, maybe try posting a picture (if you don't have a camera, you can draw one in a paint program, that what I do)
Hope this helps :)

Buy rocks? Don't tell me Australia does not have rocks, I have seen pictures, and I know there are rocks there! :p :D

You can test to see if any rocks you add are O.K.. Pour some murietic acid (vinegar will work also) and see if it bubbles. If it does there is too much calcium (I believe it is calcium) in the rock to use in your aquarium. If it does not, and does not contain metals in it, it should be fine.

I don't know about the rest of your questions, sorry

lol yeah course we have rocks - i was talking about getting one of those rock formation things that fish like to hide in, u know have holes etc., from a fish place. thanx for the tips on which natural rocks i can put in.

frank slapperinni - i really like my angel fish back & in any case i doubt the guy would even have him back coz he's a stupid *beep* loser lol. i'm not going to euthanase him, but a mate of mine might have him if he gets to be a big problem. is it true, though, that fish only grow big enough to be comfortable in their tank?

thanx for all ur help guys.

You dont have a heater?
Thats a big problem!!
If the temperature changes to much the fish will stress out and they with get ich.
You dont want to get ich when your first starting out.
Im also in australia and i know it gets hot but it does get cold too.

Go out and buy yourself a heater first thing in the morning!!!!
The heater (apart from the filter) is the most important thing in a tropical tank!

I dont mean to be rude but maybe you and your brother should have put a little more thought and reserch into this tank before you bought it.

You also need to find your self a good LFS . If the guy sold you tropical fish without a heater then hes definatly dodgie!!

If they have been going for a month now consider yourself lucky!
I guess your lucky cause your in QLD and the weather has beeen warm!

You did the right thing coming to this forum. You will get all the information you need right here :D
