ok i have switched to play sand 2 weeks ago, and to my surprise he stopped hiding under the gravel and started to swim on the front of the glass without being bothered by me watching him, he rarely hides now and is always active, all the water is clean no high stuff, temperature is at 79F. his tank mates are not aggressive, nobody picks on him, but whenever i drop the frozen melted bloodworms, they land on his face and he barely takes a sniff at them, he starts swimming back to normal but never eats. he has been like this for 3 months now? he has never eaten anything but he looks very happy at the same time, i also had an ich problem once, and he didn't caught the ich for some reason and i thought the eel was gonna be next because since he never eats his immune system must be really low and so ich will get him, but it never happens. he DOES have hiding spots in his tank, theres this 2 feet long tube that he likes to hide in and only stick his head out, theres also a treasure thingy that he shares with a pictus catfish, abd then he can always bury himself under the play sand which he likes. i do not have live plants i have fake ones, as he likes to uproot them as he glides and digs in the sand.
i have tried: frozen bloodworms, superworms, im gonna try to find live earthworms in the stores because my garden doesnt have earthworms for some reason. so will he take the earthworms??

also he is 8" long at the moment, they told me they love live earthworms, so will he eat them 100% SURE?, and if he does can it be his staple diet?

My halfbanded eel will only seem to eat dried tubiflex worm's...so that is his staple diet, they get blood worm in the tank and shrimp pellet's along with dried mealworm's, all have seen him eat is the tubiflex, maybe he eats when i leave the room or find's stuff around later, seem's happy enough and healthy :good:

Go to your nearest supermarket and buy some peeled prawns. All my predatory fish eat prawns, including fire eels, spiny eels and tyre track eels. Break them into smaller pieces and try to train him to hand feed because with greedy little devils like pictus, you need to be sure he is getting his fair share.

Have you tried live bloodworm?

My halfbanded eel only seems to eat bloodworm and eels can be fussy eaters to begin with.

You could also try soaking the frozen stuff with a bit of garlic to encourage appetite.

i would say it is eating when the lights are out, normal as they are nocturnal fish. 3 months, no food, you really think it would still be swimming about live and kicking? I dont.
Iv had mine about 5 months about the same size as yours, never ever seen it eat! But it must as it would have starved to death long before now!
