what excately does a gravel filter do?How does it clean the gravel? Does it keep all the beneficial bacteria in it? Should I get one for a 55 gallon tank with a good amount of bottom feeders?

Not used much these days as external filters and internal power filters are much easier to maintain.

me personally hate these. I like the power or canister filters. I like the fact thet you can clean them out, and not just suck every thing to the bottom.
