I know I'm new to fishies and all but this was just too frustrating...
I went into one of the largest specialty fish stores here in Toronto to get some supplies for my two boys. To cut a long story short, the sales rep, who claimed to have bred bettas and have years of experience, told me that he had never heard of bettas jumping and said that putting a lid on a betta tank was unnecessary, in addition, he asked me what I needed a divider in my tank for, said that he had a 60g (I think it was - big anyway!) tank with a bunch of male and female bettas as well as other fish in it and that a divider was unnecessary.
He claimed to be the authority and made me feel like a dope but I knew he was wrong! Funny thing is, a couple of days after we had that conversation I was working at my desk with Sparky in the quarantine bowl beside me and heard a "plop!" Sparky had jumped out of his bowl! What a doofus! I had just finished feeding him and the lid was still off.
So much for bettas not jumping.
