so when getting cichlids as juvies in general people usually say get 6 and get rid of others. people say that they usually give them back to their lfs. my questions is when you guys do give them back or even if you just give them to lfs period what do you tell them?

any and all advice is great thanks, pumh

I just brought back a few fish. I tell why I don't make any thing up. I have 2 male rams that did not like each other so I brought one back. Then I had another dwarf cichlid that was a jerk I boguht him back and said he was too mean. Then I had a pleco I did not like it pooped and I never saw it I told them that. Then I had a festivum that was not getting along with my other one and I was given a great pair of angles so I told them that.

You just say "I bought 6 young fish so I could get a pair. Now I have my pair and don't have room for the rest can I get store credit?

It's not that hard. What hard for me is sending my fish that I cared for off to god knows who. I get attached to my fish.

Much the same as snowflake really. Except I generally don't even ask for store credit. I'm usually happy just to find a store that's happy to take them. THe value of "secondhand" fish in the UK seems to be virtually nil. It's hard even to give them away at times.

I have a very good LFS that buys back fish or gives you credit. The bonus is that if you do get 6 fish to pair up, by the time they have formed a pair and things start to get nasty, the fish are generally twice as big as when you got them, so they are worth more, meaning I get more credit.

Of course it depends on the rarity/value of the fish. Last time my HRP bred I just gave them the left over fry - I had too many, they sell them for £3-£6 depending on size. They benefit from free, locally bred stock and I benefit for being on good terms with the LFS and get better deals/offers and no hassle of rehoming fish.

Mhmm, i had my 30g with a pair of kribs and i had 1 nanochromis nudiceps,(african cichlids)

and they fought all the time probably because they were all wild caught, so i got rid of my kirbs saying "there were too aggressive can i get a credit" after that tey took em and i got a $20 credit :D just for a small pair of kribs

It's always worth t to ask for credit. You put money and time into growing the fish out you should get something. I hate bring my fish to the LFS andtry my best to place fish myself then I get the cash I know they are worth.

i traded in my lobster which i bought for $20. the idiot at my lfs was trying to teach me a life lesson and only gave me $15 back. i only had it for a week, AND i had the receipt. AND i'm a very loyal customer. wth

Not every LFS will give you full price for a fish you bought, i paid 28$ for my pair of kribs and only got 20$ bsck and by that time they were fully grown

Also remember any responsible LFS will have to quarantine any fish you return to them for several weeks taking up quarantine space.

I don't know any store that does this near mean. Yes it would be best if they did but they don't.

I went to my lfs and saw my fish was still there but the other one was gone. I feed so bad seeing my fish in the lfs.

It to some extent depends on what those 4 fish are, if they are something as common as Convict Cichlids, you're unlikely to be able to get any ££ for them wherever you go, even store credit varies from store to store.

If they are a much sought after fish you should get something depending on where you go...I wanted to sell my RTM fry to a lfs, but once they found out they were CA cichlids, they just told me they won't have the space. Another lfs was keeping Jags and stated that they have to keep the Jags separate because they were killing each other, meaning they took up multiple tanks, it would be the same scenario with RTMs.

If they have grown near adult size, then the LFS will also have to have room to accomodate them.

I bought a couple of Mayan Cichlids from my lfs, they charged £25..I took them home and they started to cause beef with other occupants, I took them back to lfs after a week, they would give me no store credit for them, but I wasnt in a situation where I could do anything other.

Another lfs (same brand) down the road bought a blackbelt cichlid, again caused beef, took him back after a week and they gave me the same amount I paid in store credit back, cauldnt ask more. Different stores vary in attitudes and current occupants.

I think if you have a pair, try to sell the spares, if not I would donate them to a lfs.
