I was wondering if clown pleco's eat anything else besides wood? He stays under his driftwood and doesn't come out ever.

He will come out at night to eat. Algae wafers and veggies make a good diet.

They are very shy fish; mine's 14 and we hardly ever see him; even when he was in a tank right next to my son's computer desk for a year, he only saw him once every few weeks.

Mine has been known to nibble on algae wafers but he goes back to his wood if my DG disturbs him

What type of pleco is it exactly?
Maybe it is mainly a wood eater although you can try frozen types like worms from time to time and veggies. Drop something at night and see if it was nibbled on?
I think just one of the clown types-the butterfly type of pleco is an algae eater. The rest are wood or meat eaters.

Then you have to feed him wood I guess  Is the tank big enough for a few trees? :hey:
May be open a thread for exact identification of the type of pleco you have just in case and then follow the advise on planetcatfish under the feeding section.

Lol Max is terrified of him especially when he makes an appearance sucking on the plastic cave

i do not feed myne any speial fish food i just feed my tank with tetra prima. I always see my lown plec. he lives on a piece of bog wood and he seems happy just with that.

my 'unusual' clown plec just eats whatever he finds. catfish pellets, algae tabs, and wood. and hes always out aswell.

Plecos in general are scavengers so the question is 'What do I feed my Clown Pleco' rather than 'What does my Clown Pleco eat'

They will behave like a fat kid in a cake shop if you let them.

General Panaque guidelines are as much wood as possible, offer fresh veg.

Limit protein, so check what is actually in those wafers and pellets, a lot of them have higher protein (in the form of fish meal) than you'd imagine.

Sera i think it is I think do a wafer with Alder wood in it, they would be ideal for Panaque

im not too concerned about my clown getting the pellets and tabs. the clown is my smallest bottom feeding fish, he only ever gets the pellets that the synos and hopolos dont instantly hoover up - which is what usually happens - or cant reach. hes lucky if he finds one, they're only a couple of mm long. and he only gets algae tab once the rusty has obliterated it, and the cories have sucked it into almost nothingness.

I never see my clown plec eating anything other than wood - but BOY do I see the poo - so I know he is getting enough food!! Seriously, I thought I was prepared but that plec must spend all day constantly laying down logs - we call him plecostopooper.

I know it's strange but the fact that he hides away for most of the time makes me like him more... it's almost exciting every time he does venture out and we get a glimpse.

I throw in a blanched zuccini or carrot a few times a week for my clown plec and can see small bits on it where he ate some. And algae & Veggie wafers.
