today one of my neon tetras died, and my flame gouramis and my red tail shark are both slow moving and lingering the top of my tank gasping for air. I tested my water everything sems ok. There are no signs of disease on any fish except my sharks tail is losing a bit of red in its tail. The tank has a plentiful amount of oxygen (live plants, water circulation. There have been no recent additions to my tank like plants ornaments or anything. The only thin i have noticed wrong is the ph is 7.6 but i think they can handle that 7.6 isnt too bad.

When you say that your water conditions seem fine, does that mean that ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are all 0?????
What is your normal Ph?????? Most times when you buy fish from the LFS they are running the same Ph as you are at home so unless something has happened to make your Ph rise I would say that it isnt Ph thats the cause of the problem.
Please if you could report all water conditions as tested including NitrAtes, so we can help you better

oh i forgot...about a week ago i switched foods. It is still tropical flake but its a different brand, I also feed sinking shrimp pellets
He is swimming a little more today than yesterday

I have been keeping sharks ever since I have took up the hobby and they are something wrong with your water if the red on the redtail shark is changing colors what kind of filters to you have, like ugf etc. go to fishprofile.com it will tell you what kind of ph and stuff that the redtails need. I try to keep mine at 7.0 for the community tank and that is where my redtail is at the moment and he seems to be doing fine at that ph.

my ph has always been around 7.5 but ive kept my fish for a long time and ive had this shark for 3 months.
MY filter is an aquaclear 300 (hang off the back. It has the charcoal , foam and ammonia filter media.

Hi Steve.

When was the last time you changed the carbon and amminia remover?

Carbon only has a short live time, (a few weeks), and most ammonia removers have a limited ammonia removal capacity.

Did you add the ammonia remover to reduce high ammonia levels, or is it somthing that has always been in there.
If you remove the ammonia before the nitrifing bacteria can get to it then your tank my never fully cycle, which could lead to spikes in ammonia, if the ammonia remover fails.

Good point there Dolphin, Personally I dont use the charcoal paks nor the ammonia removers. I have my sponge for bio and filter floss packed in on top and never had a problem.
IMHO if the ammo remover wasnt working then you would have a reading. With the fish gasping at the top leads me to think that there is something wrong with your water. Now all we have to do is figure out what it is. Maybe there is something wrong with your test kit, they do get old and not always work after the get aged.
How often do you do water changes? Does your test kit test for NitrAtes. Alot of them only test for the ammo and Nitites.

Lets get this figured ouut before anymore losses

..well i found the problem  i asked my brother if he fed them or did anyhting to the tank...he said he just added some of the drops that clear the water. I DONT HAVE ANY OF THOSE DROPS he put in the amonia detector form the test kit an thought it would clear the label....

With friends like your brother, your fish don't need enemies! :-(
Hope your fish recover. Are you doing water changes to dilute the chemical (whatever it is?).

ooo eck best to change the filter catrige quick stix also probably wise to go for a water change try not to blame your brother i expect he was not intensionally trying to hurt your fish. this must seem tough but things like this happen sometimes make the best of a bad thing i think.

sorry all the fish are gone sept my lobster and loach :(

i bought all new cartriges and did a uge clean up. oh life goes on rihgt
 i did get 50 bucks from him for new fish
