i have just got 2 catfish off my friend he got from a local garden centre and he has ended up giving them to me as they are killing all his fish i know they need a bigger tank but due to my 5 ft tank cracking they gonna have to wait few days so no slating plz for size of tank as i took them off my friend in bit of a hurry

i am looking for as much info as possible as i have never seen these before i think its a black tipped shark??? but best to get second opinion

these fish are happy in them selfs they very active i have been feeding them bloodworm and flake food until i know more gonna keep em seperate from other fish

they are both on average 4-5 inch in size and are in brackish water were kept in freshwater by my friend till i got them

can add more piks or info if needed

not sure of the name but these cats will grow huge, way too big for any home aquarium. i would get rid asap as they will suffer in your tank. there was someone on here asking the same question not so long back and they got loads of abuse for saying they were going to keep them. just a warning in advance

so you basically saying get rid? as i am willing to give em a chance as i will have 5 foot tank soon and they jus small at moment

sorry but i cant take em back i didnt buy em i got them off a friend! for FREE! and also why cant i keep them till there too big then donate them to local sealife centre or something?

yeah i understand what people are trying to tell me but somefriend is a bit harsh he has jus started keeping fish i have had fish for years he has only got a small tank and the garden centre he got them from are bad people cos they do not take fish back!!! as my friend had already tryed a few options so i decided with having a 5 foot tank i would kindly house them till...

obviously my first option was to keep but as you all have said this is not an option so i will house them till i find a suitable home for them

Watch your language please! This is a family forum.

I read wrong thought your friend had a fish shop, still the local garden centre i would be inclined to kick off in there big style making such a show, demanding at top of my voice how they can sell these fish without knowing anything about the size they get to, as stated i have a friend who travel's the uk collecting giant fish for rehoming, so if you have a email adress i will pass it on to him and see what he says

it wasnt me who went but i understand ur feelings as i would do exactly if not worse than what you said lol i have a family friend coming to see them in 2 week as he is abroad at mo but ill let you know nelly as soon as i know whats happening cos i have said to laddo that he could see em and take em if he wants as he has a double garage converted in to fish room and has been a big fish keeper since before i was born?

id have to agree with everyone else, they look nice and small now, but a fish thats adult size is nearly 5 ft grows rapidly!! they would out grow your 5ft tank in no time,

i understand you dont want to part with them just yet, because they are fantastic looking fish, BUT wht are you going to do when they get to big and the opportunity to re-home is no longer available? not many places are going to re-home a fish thats adult size is 4-5ft.lol and as you got them for free, whats the problem with passing them on now? it would be cruel not to.

if you want a shark me old son, get a red tailed shark,
Size : Up to 6 inches (15 cm)
pH : 6.5 - 7.5
Temperature : 73°F - 79°F (23°C - 26°C)

or a rainbow shark, Size : 6 inches (15 cm)

pH : 6.5 - 7.5
Temperature : 75°F - 80°F (24°C - 27°C)
Lifespan : 5 - 8 years.

^ these would be cushty in your tank :)

can you see a pattern in size?lol

maybe a bala shark? grows to around 13 inches, might be ok for a 5ft tank?

trust me, if it was ok to keep a huge fish in a tiny tank id have a Poroderma africanum , the Striped Catshark, but i know its wrong and cant be done.

hey the average size of a striped cat shark is only around 2.5 foot so it is possible for your dream to come true lol!
8-10 foot, 4 foot wide, your sorted! ha
the hi fin paroon shark, average captive size is around 48" so unless you have some serious money, serious room and the ability to build a seriously big tank/pond, then i suggest you go about finding them a new home!
they would probably live in something like a 6x2x2 for a couple of years, once they reach 12-16" they tend to really slow down, the pictures of the big fish that are becoming increasingly rare in the wild are over a couple of decades old. this by any means is no reason to keep these fish in captivity, no one should sell them, let alone someone being able to buy one. i see them a lot, common in a lot of fish shops i go into, its a shame as almost 100% of them will have their lives cut short, dramatically!
there is certain big fish that can and do, do well in the home aquaria, but 4 foot plus? thats some joke that isn't it??
